Kraken or Bitfinex: which should you actually use?

For a Salvadoran trader who wants to keep the choice of collateral open, Kraken is a strong place to start. Its international derivatives account accepts several assets as backing for crypto positions. This is useful if you want a USD balance or USDC to support the trade instead of first changing everything into the collateral required by a different venue.

Bitfinex Derivatives deserves an equally serious look for a different reason: zero maker and taker execution fees, alongside a clearly identified derivatives company supervised in El Salvador. If commission and that local regulatory connection are your priorities, Bitfinex wins this comparison. Kraken’s place in the shortlist rests on the collateral choices explained below.

Two different reasons to choose a futures account
Your priorityCloser fitWhat decides it
Use USD, USDC or a wider range of existing assets as backingKrakenMulti-collateral derivatives; each asset has its own valuation rules.
Remove execution commission from frequent entries and exitsBitfinex DerivativesPublished zero maker/taker fees; funding and other costs remain.
Identify a Salvadoran-supervised derivatives providerBitfinex DerivativesMatch the derivatives agreement to the CNAD-supervised company.
Pay a shop or receive a simple BTC transferA payment walletThat is a different task from opening a leveraged position.
A Bitcoin payment terminal and receipt beside a separate laptop displaying a leveraged Bitcoin position.
Paying with Bitcoin and trading its price are separate activities.

Both trading choices require an eligible, verified account. El Salvador is absent from Kraken’s international derivatives exclusion list, but that does not establish CNAD approval for Kraken. Bitfinex’s documentation also makes verification and jurisdiction conditions part of access. Use those product rules rather than assuming the country’s Bitcoin reputation opens every trading service.

02
Kraken’s strengths

When Kraken is worth paying a trading fee for

Kraken

The useful question is what Kraken lets you do with the money you already have. A trader paid in dollars may prefer to keep actual USD as collateral. Someone holding USDC can consider using that asset directly where deposits and the selected derivatives account support it. This can avoid an unnecessary sale solely to obtain another platform’s required token.

Your balance and your available margin are not the same number

Kraken’s published Multi-M collateral table currently applies no valuation deduction to USD and a 0.5% deduction to USDC and USDT. BTC has a 1% deduction. In plain English, the platform counts slightly less than the full market value of some assets when deciding how much they can support. That reduction is not a trading loss or a charge taken from your token balance.

For a dollar-funded Salvadoran account, actual USD and a dollar-linked token therefore deserve separate comparisons. Holding USD can avoid the stablecoin valuation deduction, but only if the enabled deposit and withdrawal method makes sense for your budget. A cheaper bank transfer can matter more than the small difference in counted collateral.

Keep Bitcoin savings separate from a Bitcoin trade

If you back a BTC long with Bitcoin, a falling BTC price hurts twice: the leveraged position loses value and the coins supporting it are worth less in dollars. Using dollar-denominated backing removes that second Bitcoin-price exposure. It does not make the long position safe; it simply makes its risk easier to see.

Consider a Salvadoran reader who keeps long-term BTC savings but wants a short-term Ether trade. There is no need to expose the entire savings balance to that idea. A separately sized derivatives allocation makes the intended loss easier to understand. Whether that allocation belongs on Kraken depends on the actual asset, deposit method and market, not on the biggest leverage number in an advertisement.

For an existing Kraken user, staying within a familiar verified account can also avoid another exchange transfer. That is a convenience, not a claim that transfers are free or that Kraken has better fills on every coin. If the same trade on Bitfinex has suitable collateral and a better total cost, the fee advantage below is real.

Bitfinex in El Salvador

What Bitfinex’s El Salvador licence and zero fees change

CNAD’s announcement identifies Bitfinex Derivatives El Salvador, S.A. de C.V. as the company providing the derivatives service under its supervision. This is more useful than a vague statement that a large exchange is “regulated somewhere.” It lets the reader identify the actual counterparty for the product being compared.

The Bitfinex group also has separate securities and exchange operations. Its May 2026 announcement of another Salvadoran approval should not be confused with the earlier derivatives announcement. A tokenised security, a spot purchase and a perpetual position are different products, even if their websites share the same brand.

Zero commission is a genuine advantage, with a clear boundary

Bitfinex’s current policy sets maker and taker trading fees at zero, including derivatives. It says the policy applies without a trading-volume requirement or a need to hold a particular token. That makes it relevant to a small account as well as an active trader. The advantage is execution commission; funding payments, withdrawal costs and differences in fill prices still need to be counted.

Bitfinex’s zero execution commission is most relevant to frequent fills; the comparison below retains the actual Kraken fee example so the difference can be priced.

The derivatives wallet matters more than the logo

Bitfinex documents BTC and USDt as derivatives collateral and leverage up to 100x on qualifying markets; the limit depends on the pair and position conditions. Its derivatives wallet is distinct from the ordinary Exchange, Margin and Funding wallets. Intermediate or Full verification is required in an eligible jurisdiction.

A deposit credited to the main account does not automatically mean it is ready to support a perpetual. Bitfinex says direct deposits and withdrawals to or from the derivatives wallet are not permitted; assets move internally. If you see a funded account but no usable derivatives balance, check that transfer step before making a second external deposit.

Trading costs

How much does zero commission save on a real-sized trade?

Use the position value, rather than the deposit, when comparing commission. Suppose you set aside $200 behind a $2,000 position. At Kraken’s starting published taker rate of 0.05%, an entry costs $1. If you exit at the same position value and rate, another $1 is due. Bitfinex’s published execution commission for those fills is zero.

Execution commission example: a $2,000 entry and equal-value exit cost $2 at 0.05% per fill, compared with $0 at Bitfinex’s zero fee rate.
An equal-value round trip isolates execution commission. Actual closing value, funding and fill prices can change the result.

The $2 difference is 1% of the example’s $200 starting margin. Repeat the same round trip ten times and commission alone totals $20 at that rate, assuming no change in position value or fee tier. More trading has not increased the money backing the account; it has just increased the amount traded and the charges applied to it.

A cheaper commission does not guarantee a cheaper fill

Imagine one venue fills your $2,000 purchase 0.15% worse than the other. That difference is approximately $3, already larger than the example’s $2 commission saving. This is an illustration, not a measured Bitfinex or Kraken spread. It explains why the order preview and the live market deserve more attention than a fee banner alone.

The practical test is the executable quote for your intended size. If only a small amount is offered at the best price, the rest of a market order can fill further away. On a less active contract, inspect the price levels covering the whole order before treating zero commission as the winning total price.

What if you leave the position open?

Perpetual funding is a separate payment associated with keeping the contract price close to the underlying market. Depending on the rate and your direction, you can pay or receive it. Do not assume that zero trading commission means a position can be held indefinitely at zero cost. The relevant figure is the current funding schedule for that exact market.

Kraken’s basic published derivatives tiers start at 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker. Volume discounts can change the comparison for an established account. Use your displayed fee tier, rather than assigning a high-volume discount to a new customer. This guide’s arithmetic deliberately uses the ordinary starting taker example.

05
Payments versus positions

Can a Bitcoin payment wallet also trade futures?

A wallet that receives a Bitcoin payment solves a different problem from an exchange that opens a leveraged position. In El Salvador this distinction matters because a visitor can encounter Bitcoin at a shop, in a transfer app or in a national-policy headline before ever seeing a futures account. Familiarity with sending BTC does not automatically carry over to managing margin.

When you buy BTC outright, you own the purchased amount and can normally withdraw it subject to the service’s rules. A BTC perpetual gives you exposure to price movements; it does not deliver the displayed position quantity to a personal wallet. A $3,000 BTC position is therefore not the same as $3,000 of withdrawable Bitcoin.

Why Lightning experience does not settle the funding question

A Lightning payment request and a normal Bitcoin deposit address are different transfer instructions. If an exchange offers a Lightning deposit, use its specific invoice workflow. Do not paste a payment request into an unrelated blockchain withdrawal field or assume that a wallet supporting BTC supports every way of moving it.

The same distinction applies after trading. A profit shown in dollars might be a USD account result or a stablecoin-denominated balance. Check what is actually withdrawable before promising to send a Bitcoin payment to someone else. Converting a profit into BTC introduces a separate price and fee decision.

What has changed with Chivo?

The IMF’s September 2026 statement says majority ownership and operational control of Chivo had moved to a private operator, while the government retained a minority stake and custodial responsibilities for customer assets. That is more specific than describing the wallet as simply unchanged, entirely government-run or entirely privatised.

For someone choosing a futures exchange, the practical implication is modest: do not base the choice on old promises about a national wallet. Use the current payment service terms for transfers and the derivatives venue’s terms for trading. The wallet’s ownership story does not establish which contracts your exchange account can open.

06
Position size

Should you use 5x, 20x or 100x?

Start with the size of the loss you are considering, not the largest number in the leverage menu. A $1,000 position moves by about $20 when its underlying price moves 2%, before fees and funding. That price exposure is the same whether you back it with $200 at 5x or $50 at 20x. What changes is how much room the account has to absorb the move.

With $50 behind the position, the example’s $20 adverse move consumes 40% of that starting margin. With $200 behind it, the same move consumes 10%. Actual liquidation can occur before all the margin is lost because the exchange requires a remaining buffer and applies its own valuation rules. A simple “100 divided by leverage” calculation is not a reliable liquidation quote.

A short can be useful without being oversized

Suppose you hold BTC for the long term but want to reduce exposure around a specific event. A smaller short can offset some price movement without selling the entire holding. It creates a second account obligation, though: the short can lose money as BTC rises even while the original coins gain. Savings in a separate wallet do not automatically replenish the derivatives account.

This is why a hedge needs a defined size and end point. A short larger than the BTC holding stops being a simple offset and becomes a net bet on falling prices. Leaving the position running after selling the original coins changes the purpose again. These are practical trade decisions, not paperwork that can be postponed until withdrawal.

Make the exit part of the entry

Kraken Pro supports take-profit and stop-loss orders linked to a futures entry, with simple and advanced settings. An exit can be prepared before the position opens rather than relying on a reminder to watch the chart later. A stop is still an instruction subject to triggering and execution, not an insurance policy that guarantees an exact loss.

For a reader moving from everyday Bitcoin use to leverage, a small position with an understandable exit is more useful than copying another trader’s percentage. The aim is to know the dollar effect of a price move, where the position should end, and which balance will absorb the loss. Increasing leverage does not improve the underlying trade idea.

Local rules

Is crypto leverage legal in El Salvador?

El Salvador has a digital-asset regulatory framework and an identifiable CNAD-supervised derivatives business. That supports a more concrete answer than treating the country as either a free-for-all or a market with no options. It does not mean every exchange, token or leveraged product is approved simply because Bitcoin has a special place in national policy.

The 2025 reform to the Bitcoin law made acceptance voluntary for private participants. Older descriptions saying every business must accept BTC are therefore not a good basis for current trading advice. The merchant-payment rule and permission to offer a derivatives service answer different questions.

Do Bitcoin tax headlines cover a futures profit?

Do not automatically extend wording about Bitcoin exchanges to every USDT-settled perpetual, other token or securities product. The asset you hold, the contract you trade and the activity you perform can differ. Keep the trade statement and the asset movements available for a qualified Salvadoran tax review rather than assuming every crypto-labelled gain has the same treatment.

This is particularly relevant if the same wallet receives payments for a business and funds personal trading. A receipt from a customer, the return of your own deposit and a realised trading profit are not the same kind of transaction. Separate records make the distinction visible without turning the article into a tax manual.

08
Wallet-based trading

Would an onchain perpetual exchange suit you better?

A perpetual DEX can be worth comparing if you already use a compatible wallet and want to manage onchain positions. It is not automatically the better choice because El Salvador is associated with Bitcoin adoption. Many onchain derivatives use different networks and collateral from a simple BTC payment wallet.

GMX’s fee documentation, for example, separates trading-related charges from blockchain execution costs. A self-custody wallet can remove one exchange deposit step while adding gas, approvals and contract interactions. For a small trade, those extra transactions may matter more than a small difference in the advertised position fee.

Consider the DEX when its actual market, collateral and permitted access fit the intended trade. If the whole reason for opening a wallet is to reach an equivalent BTC perpetual that is already available in your verified CEX account, compare the extra work and cost first. A wallet connection is not proof of unrestricted residence eligibility or local regulatory approval.

Withdrawals

What should you check before taking profits out?

First close or reduce the intended position and inspect the amount the account actually permits you to withdraw. An unrealised profit can still be supporting an open trade. Removing backing while leaving exposure in place can make the remaining position more fragile, even if the screen had looked comfortably profitable.

For Bitfinex, remember the internal move out of the derivatives wallet before using the supported withdrawal workflow. For Kraken, select the actual cash or crypto balance you want to send and use the enabled method for your verified account. El Salvador’s use of USD does not turn a Salvadoran bank account into a US domestic ACH account.

Price the full exit in the form you need: dollars credited to a bank, USDT received by a wallet, or BTC delivered through a supported transfer method. A sale quote and a network withdrawal are separate costs. The exchange that wins a commission comparison can still be less convenient for the destination you use.

Keep a record of the entry, closing fill, funding and final withdrawal. It makes later decisions much easier: you can see whether the trade was profitable after costs and whether changing exchanges would actually have helped. A screenshot of a percentage return alone cannot answer either question.

Local FAQ

El Salvador futures questions

01Does a local Bitfinex licence protect me from liquidation?

No. Supervision identifies the provider and its regulatory relationship. It does not prevent a leveraged position from losing money or reaching its liquidation threshold.

02Can I send money directly to the Bitfinex derivatives wallet?

Bitfinex says external deposits and withdrawals do not go directly through that wallet. Use the supported main-account deposit and internal asset transfer process.

03Does a Kraken BTC perpetual give me Bitcoin to spend?

A perpetual is a price-exposure contract. Its displayed position size is not an amount of purchased Bitcoin ready to send to a shop.

04Is the biggest leverage setting the same for every coin?

No. Contract rules, position size and account conditions determine the limit. The value shown for one BTC market should not be assigned to every altcoin.

05Can a Salvadoran abroad use the same exchange shortlist?

Residence and location conditions still apply. A Salvadoran passport does not give a resident of a restricted country the product access described for an eligible resident of El Salvador.

06Should I move an existing trade just to save commission?

Compare the cost of closing, transferring and reopening with the expected future saving. Moving between venues introduces fees, price movement and operational steps that can exceed a small commission difference.
