A loss budget, an exit order and a trading lock do different jobs. None guarantees a maximum loss. If trading is already affecting your money, sleep or relationships, use the support routes below before considering another position.
Keep rent, bills, debt repayments and emergency savings outside the trading budget. Decide a cash amount you can lose without replacing it with borrowing or another deposit. A percentage of a futures wallet says little if that wallet contains money needed elsewhere.
Write down both a per-position budget and a session limit. Several positions can lose together; three correlated trades are not three independent allowances. Include realized losses, remaining open exposure and charges when deciding whether the session limit has been reached.
Cash budget
For a planning example, a $50 loss allowance with $10 reserved for costs leaves $40 for the price move.
Position, not deposit
A 2% adverse move on $2,000 is $40. Higher leverage reduces the initial margin required; it does not reduce that $40 loss.
The limit of the estimate
The $10 reserve is illustrative, not a quoted fee. Slippage, funding and an unavailable exit can push the actual loss beyond $50.
For planning only, the position-size calculator separates the cash budget from margin. Its result is not permission to keep trading after your limit is reached.
What platform controls can and cannot do
An exit order and a restriction on new trading solve different problems. A cooldown is not an instruction to close positions already open. Check those positions and their protective orders before relying on a lock; uninstalling an app does not close a trade either.
Bybit: check the product and account
The documented futures cooldown prevents opening or increasing positions while allowing reductions and closes. Spot margin, options, bots and copy trading are among the exclusions. A main-account restriction does not automatically cover subaccounts.
The optional daily-loss trigger includes unrealized P&L and has a $100 minimum. Do not raise a smaller personal loss limit to match that feature; use the manual restriction instead.
The documented cooling period covers its listed futures interfaces, including API access, and allows reduce-only orders. Existing positions can remain open. The instructions say activation is unavailable with open orders.
That condition matters if a protective order is already in place: do not assume pressing the cooldown button protects or closes the position. Review the official steps and seek platform help if the transition is unclear.
A stop-market order can fill beyond its trigger; a stop-limit order can remain unfilled. Isolated margin limits the collateral allocated under that product’s rules, but automatic margin additions can increase exposure. These controls do not guarantee a cash ceiling.
When to pause
Repeatedly moving your own limits, borrowing to replace losses, hiding activity, interrupted sleep or trading mainly to recover a previous loss are reasons to stop adding exposure. You do not need to wait for liquidation or a diagnosis to ask for help.
Use a documented trading restriction where available, mute trading prompts and tell someone you trust what is happening. Do not share passwords or seed phrases. Avoid opening another account to get around a restriction. If open positions prevent you from stepping away, use the exchange’s official support for its available closing controls; a support request itself does not pause liquidation.
Where to seek relevant support
For account access, an unfilled order or a withdrawal, use the help centre reached through the exchange’s own app or verified website. Keep order IDs and timestamps. Anyone asking for a seed phrase or an extra transfer to “unlock recovery” should not receive them.

Bybit’s article mixes UTC examples with a local-time end-date note. This page therefore makes no fixed-hour promise: use the end time displayed in the account. Binance’s regional article dates differ; the shared order and position restrictions are the basis of the example above.
