Which crypto exchange should a Cyprus resident use for futures?
For a resident of the government-controlled Republic of Cyprus, Kraken is the most convincing starting point in this comparison. Its European derivatives provider is based in Nicosia and appears in CySEC’s records. More importantly for the trade itself, its offering includes perpetual and dated crypto contracts, euro funding and published European fees. A Cyprus address does not remove the account assessment, but it lets us identify the actual regional product instead of relying on a global advertisement.
OKX X-Perps is the main exchange alternative. It offers long and short expiry futures with a funding mechanism under a Malta-regulated investment firm. Someone already using OKX and holding eligible collateral may prefer it. At the standard starting commission tier, Kraken and OKX are tied; the real differences are contract structure, collateral and the account you already have.
Where this recommendation applies
The comparison above covers the Republic’s government-controlled areas. Northern Cyprus is assessed separately below.
| Your situation | The useful starting point | Why it changes the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Living in the Republic and funding in euros | Kraken EEA derivatives | A directly identifiable Cyprus derivatives entity and a choice of contract types |
| Already using eligible collateral on OKX | OKX X-Perps | Avoid moving funds only to obtain the same starting commission |
| Living in Northern Cyprus | Residence-specific confirmation first | The EEA and SEPA assumptions below cannot simply be extended north |
| Visiting Cyprus while resident elsewhere | Your existing lawful residence account | A holiday or short stay does not automatically change product eligibility |
This is not a ranking of firms with the most offices in Limassol. A local corporate address may help identify the responsible company, but it does not demonstrate cheaper fills, better liquidity or an appropriate product. The recommendation rests on the service available to the reader, not on proximity to a company building.
Kraken or OKX: what would make you choose differently?
Kraken’s EEA derivatives documentation distinguishes perpetual contracts from contracts with a fixed maturity. A perpetual has no scheduled end date, although it carries its own ongoing funding and risk rules. A dated contract has a defined settlement point. The choice matters when you expect to hold a position beyond a quick intraday move.
X-Perps use familiar long-and-short trading controls but are expiry futures. OKX’s specification lists a five-year tenor for the reviewed contracts. That far-away date does not make them identical to a perpetual with no scheduled expiry. You do not need to learn settlement mechanics before comparing a short trade, but you should know what you own before planning a long holding period.
Starting with euros
Kraken supports EUR as collateral, and its reviewed EEA schedule lists a 0% haircut for EUR cash. That can suit a Cyprus resident who wants to start from a local euro balance. USD remains the settlement unit, so euro collateral does not make every fee and trading result euro-denominated.
OKX promotes the use of eligible cryptoassets as margin. That is useful when retaining particular crypto holdings is part of your plan. It also means the backing can change value while the position changes value. Select the arrangement you can monitor clearly rather than treating “multi-asset” as a synonym for lower risk.
How much leverage can a Cyprus account use?
OKX advertises up to 10x for eligible EEA X-Perps customers. Kraken’s EEA contract table labels its published leverage column as a professional maximum. Treat those numbers differently: an advertised ceiling and a professional specification do not promise the same allowance to every retail account. The order screen and approved account category determine the usable limit.
For ordinary BTC and ETH trading, confirm the specific market before funding. A coin appearing in the spot app does not establish that its futures contract is enabled. Someone arriving from a global 100x or 200x platform should expect a different European product, rather than assuming a Cyprus address unlocks the global settings.
Both reviewed starting schedules quote 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker commission on position value. Maker means the order waits on the book before another trader fills it; taker means it matches available liquidity immediately. A new account does not win a lower base rate merely by choosing one of these brands. Compare the market, collateral and holding costs once access is confirmed.
Starting with an existing futures account
If your current approved account already offers the required market, compare switching costs before moving. Closing a position, transferring collateral and reopening elsewhere creates a gap in exposure and additional fees. A new platform should solve a specific problem—contract access, collateral, execution or support—not just have a better-looking review score.
For a new Cyprus-based customer wanting BTC or ETH futures, Kraken wins this page’s starting recommendation because it combines documented local-entity accountability with a broad choice of European crypto contract structures. For an established OKX user with suitable funds already in place, X-Perps can be the less disruptive choice. Staying avoids a collateral transfer and a potential period without the intended market exposure.
What changes if you live in Northern Cyprus?
Northern Cyprus is recognised as an independent state only by Türkiye. The European Commission explains that EU law is suspended in the part of the island where the Republic’s government does not exercise effective control. For an exchange customer, the important consequence is that a general statement about Cyprus being in the EU cannot settle every account question for a northern address.
A concrete banking difference
Kraken’s SEPA help page marks Cyprus as supported but separately marks Northern Cyprus as outside SEPA. That is an identifiable operational difference. A euro balance or a bank branch located somewhere on the island does not prove a payment can use the same European transfer instructions.
A bank account in Türkiye has its own bank-country and transfer details. It should not be described as a Republic of Cyprus SEPA account. A northern resident may have other legitimate accounts, but the exchange must accept the customer and the funding arrangement together. Bank-account ownership does not by itself establish derivatives eligibility.
How should the address be entered?
Use the actual residential address and the identification the provider accepts for that location. If the country selector or address validator does not represent your circumstances correctly, ask the provider to resolve it before depositing. Selecting Türkiye merely because it recognises the northern administration does not make the person a resident of Türkiye.
Likewise, using a southern address where you do not live is not an answer to a rejected northern address. It can produce an account that appears usable until a withdrawal or enhanced review requires proof. The practical goal is a verified account that can return your funds, not just a successful first deposit.
What about Turkish Cypriots with Republic documents?
We have not confirmed a partner’s public policy that explicitly approves Northern Cyprus residents for the same derivatives product recommended above. The actionable conclusion is to obtain residence-specific acceptance before funding, while leaving the Republic’s documented options visible for readers to whom they apply. The absence of a public approval is not being turned into a country-wide crypto ban.
Can British, Greek or Israeli residents use these exchanges?
For foreign residents, the practical difference is the document proving residence and whether an existing overseas account must migrate to the European agreement.
British citizens living in the Republic
A British citizen who genuinely lives in Cyprus should present that residence accurately. A UK passport alone does not mean the account must remain configured as if the person still lived in the United Kingdom. However, an existing UK account may need a formal residence update and a different agreement before European derivatives are available.
The UK government’s Cyprus guidance distinguishes people protected by the Withdrawal Agreement from those who moved after the transition. Their residence documents can differ. The exchange, rather than this guide, decides which proof it accepts for verification. There is no need to reproduce a full immigration application manual to explain the trading consequence: old UK account details and current Cyprus circumstances must agree.
If you retain a UK bank account, check the payment method separately. GBP funding availability is provider-specific, and a supported pound deposit is not evidence of futures permission. Compare the final collateral credited after any currency conversion rather than assuming the account with the familiar bank name will be cheapest.
Greek citizens living in Cyprus
Greek citizens are EU citizens, and Cyprus provides the MEU1 registration procedure for EU residents. That can be part of the residence evidence; it is not an investment licence or automatic derivatives approval. A Greek passport and a Greek IBAN may remain legitimate alongside a Cyprus residential address.
Israeli citizens and other non-EU residents
For an Israeli citizen living in the Republic, the same core question is whether the provider accepts the verified Cyprus residence and the individual account. A short visit is different from a move. The Migration Department describes separate temporary-residence categories for visitors and other non-EU residents; nationality by itself does not choose the correct category.
Already living abroad as a Cypriot?
Use the rules for your actual residence abroad. A Cyprus passport does not guarantee you can retain the same European futures access while living in a jurisdiction where the service is restricted. The helpful distinction is not “local versus foreign person”; it is the product available for the person’s real, verified circumstances.
Do Limassol, Nicosia, Larnaca and Paphos have different limits?
The reviewed rules do not give separate retail crypto leverage limits to these four cities within the government-controlled Republic. There is no substantiated “Limassol account” with extra leverage just because the city has many financial firms. Your customer classification and the contracted product matter more than which of these cities appears on the utility bill.
A local address can nevertheless create a practical verification issue when documents use different languages or spellings. Keep the address consistent with accepted official evidence and ask about translation requirements if needed. Do not alter a document to make an automated form accept it. A genuine spelling difference should be explained, not concealed.
The north/south distinction deserves the dedicated section above because it changes assumptions about EU law and banking. A reader in Paphos and one in Larnaca can use the same product comparison when their account circumstances match.
People in unusual residential situations, including the British Sovereign Base Areas, should not assume that a Cyprus mailing address alone establishes the same agreement. The accession arrangements treat these areas separately. Ask the provider which residence classification applies to your actual address; a visit to a nearby city does not resolve that question.
What does Kraken’s Cyprus licence actually tell you?
Kraken identifies Payward Europe Digital Solutions (CY) Limited as its EEA derivatives provider under CySEC licence 342/17. CySEC’s approved-domain list includes eu.kraken.com for that company. These are useful details because they connect a recognisable trading brand with a named firm and an independently published domain record.
That does not mean every Kraken product is provided by that Cyprus firm. Spot, custody and derivatives may have different entities and regulatory arrangements. When reading a product agreement, match the firm to the service being used. A licence covering one activity should not be treated as insurance for every balance in the wider brand’s apps.
A genuine licence can still be copied by a fake website
A scam page can reproduce a company name and licence number. The independent domain record is therefore more useful than a badge displayed on the page asking for a deposit. Navigate from the authentic provider and compare the company details; do not rely on a search advertisement that merely looks familiar.
No legitimate proof of a licence demonstrates that a leveraged trade will be profitable. Regulation concerns the service and the firm’s obligations. It does not stop Bitcoin falling, guarantee a stop’s execution price or reimburse ordinary trading losses. Keep the amount committed to trading separate from money needed for ordinary living expenses.
For a disputed account action, retain the agreement, account statements and the firm’s response. Cyprus’s Financial Ombudsman publishes a complaints process with eligibility and procedural conditions. It is a possible formal route for relevant cases, not an instant withdrawal service or a way to reverse a losing trade.
Should you fund futures with euros or pounds from Cyprus?
For a Cyprus resident paid in euros, an eligible EUR bank deposit is the natural comparison point. Buying Bitcoin first solely to move the money can add a coin purchase, a network charge and another conversion. That extra journey needs a reason, such as coins already held and accepted as collateral, rather than becoming the default way to fund every futures account.
A British resident with sterling savings has a different choice: convert pounds before depositing, or use an available GBP deposit method and deal with the currency inside the account. Kraken lists some pound funding methods as UK-only and another as available to EEA customers upon request. Keeping a British bank account does not automatically make every UK funding option available after moving to Cyprus.
Compare the amount arriving, not the advertised percentage
Suppose two quotes for the same £1,000 would leave €1,168 and €1,155 after all conversion and transfer charges. The first leaves €13 more trading capital. These are illustrative quotes, not current exchange rates. Comparing the final amount avoids mistaking a “no transfer fee” offer for the cheapest route when its exchange rate is worse.
Run that comparison for your intended size. A fixed charge has more impact on a small weekly deposit than on a larger occasional transfer. Conversely, a percentage spread keeps growing with the amount exchanged. You do not need a complicated model: write down pounds leaving, euros arriving and any later charge before the balance becomes usable collateral.
The cheapest deposit may have an awkward return journey
Check the withdrawal currency before sending the first payment. Kraken’s listed GBP withdrawal routes have narrower regional conditions than the existence of a GBP balance might suggest. Its EUR SEPA options are relevant to an eligible Cyprus euro account. Confirm the route actually shown in the account rather than planning to withdraw through a UK-only method that is unavailable to your residence.
If the eventual spending is in euros, keeping the cash-out in EUR can avoid an unnecessary euro-to-pound conversion followed by another conversion for local expenses. If the money is needed in Britain, compare the opposite route. This is about keeping more of a trading result, not predicting which currency will strengthen.
Kraken and OKX have matching published base maker/taker commissions for the European products reviewed here. The useful tie-breaker for this reader is therefore the complete funding and cash-out path. Keep funding payments and any conversion of dollar trading results in the comparison; equal trading commissions do not make the whole account equally cheap.
Is crypto profit taxed at 8% in Cyprus now?
Cyprus’s Tax Department says the special Article 20E treatment applies to qualifying cryptoasset disposals from 1 January 2026, with an 8% rate on relevant profits. The date of acquisition does not by itself remove a 2026 disposal from that rule. Older claims that all personal crypto gains are automatically tax-free need revisiting.
The same guidance limits how losses in that special category can be used: it describes offsetting qualifying losses against relevant gains of the same person in the same tax year. It does not promise that an unused loss can shelter any future income or another company’s profit.
Does 8% automatically apply to a futures account?
No. A derivative tracking Bitcoin is not necessarily a disposal of the Bitcoin itself. The official cryptoasset definition and the actual transaction need to be considered. We do not apply the special rate to every futures settlement merely because the underlying market is crypto. Mining and other activity can also require different analysis.
For a simple illustration within the qualifying category, €6,000 of relevant gains and €1,000 of eligible same-year losses leave €5,000; 8% of that is €400. This is not an estimate for an entire futures account. It shows the arithmetic only after the transactions have been correctly classified.
Non-dom status is not a universal crypto exemption
A person hearing about Cyprus’s non-dom arrangements should not infer that every trading profit is exempt. Domicile, tax residence and the category of income answer different questions. The country’s tax-residence guidance includes the 183-day and conditional 60-day routes; simply spending 60 days on the island does not satisfy every condition by itself.
For an active trader moving to Cyprus, the useful preparation is to separate existing coin holdings, new derivative trades, funding payments and business receipts. Then establish residence and the treatment of each category. A single year-end exchange balance hides those distinctions and is a poor basis for deciding what tax is due.
What should happen to open trades when you move?
Resolve the account change before relying on the new jurisdiction’s futures offering. Ask whether open positions can remain, whether the account needs a new agreement and whether any collateral must be converted or withdrawn. A country change can involve more than updating a postal address in a profile screen.
Separate the timing of the move from the timing of a trade. If a provider requires positions to be closed or an account mode to be changed, factor the trading fees and the period without exposure into the decision. Do not promise yourself that the new account will be approved immediately because you already passed verification elsewhere.
An existing coin balance deserves its own transfer plan. Kraken’s current regional restrictions list USDT as unavailable for deposit or trading in the EEA. Do not move an old global-account balance on the assumption that the European account supports the same tokens. Check the destination asset and network before deciding what to convert or transfer.
Should an expat trade personally or through a Cyprus company?
Do not open a company account merely because Cyprus has a financial-services industry. A corporate account represents the company, with its own verification and ownership information. Money in it is not interchangeable with a personal balance simply because one person controls both.
A self-employed foreign resident trading personal savings and a company managing treasury funds present different facts. The exchange needs the correct applicant, and the source of the deposit should be consistent with that applicant. Decide who owns the assets before comparing a business onboarding process with a personal account.
For the ordinary reader of this guide, the personal-account comparison is the relevant starting point. A corporate structure should solve a real operational or business need. It is not a shortcut to a higher leverage setting, a substitute for residence evidence or a guarantee of a lower tax bill.
Does the Cyprus licence protect the money in your futures account?
Kraken’s Cyprus derivatives company publishes an Investor Compensation Fund policy. It addresses eligible claims when the firm cannot return covered client money or financial instruments. It does not repay a normal loss caused by a Bitcoin price move or a liquidated position.
The policy’s limit is the lower of 90% of a covered claim and €20,000. For example, a qualifying €10,000 claim would be capped at €9,000; a qualifying €30,000 claim would reach the €20,000 ceiling. Eligibility, exclusions and the formal compensation process still apply. This is not an automatic payout for every balance shown under the Kraken brand.
That distinction matters because a spot wallet, payment balance and derivatives account can involve different companies and protections. Identify the company and service holding the money, rather than assuming one Cyprus licence covers everything in the app. Before seeking professional classification for different trading conditions, read the protection changes too: the policy excludes several professional and institutional categories, including clients classified as professional on request.
