Where can Hungarian residents trade crypto futures now?
Kraken's European derivatives account is the clearest starting point for a Hungarian resident who wants crypto futures. It offers a documented European product rather than relying on a worldwide futures menu. OKX X-Perps is another candidate under its published EEA coverage, subject to the product actually being activated for your verified Hungarian account.
Bybit EU belongs in a different part of the comparison: its documented spot-margin product uses borrowed assets. That can suit a leveraged spot position, but it should not be presented as the global Bybit perpetuals account. A reader asking for Bitcoin futures should not have to discover that distinction after depositing.
| Choice | The relevant product | When it is useful |
|---|---|---|
| Kraken European derivatives | Crypto perpetuals and fixed-maturity futures, subject to account approval. | You want a dedicated crypto derivatives account with published contract and collateral documentation. |
| OKX X-Perps | European expiry futures with a funding mechanism; account activation can vary. | You prefer OKX and can confirm X-Perps is enabled for your actual residence. |
| Bybit EU spot margin | Borrowing within the European spot account; the published maximum is up to 10x. | You specifically want leveraged spot trading and understand the borrowing charges. |
| Revolut crypto | Its Hungarian help page still describes discontinued crypto services. | Do not plan a new crypto trading account around an assumed reopening. |
Kraken leads because it directly addresses the futures requirement. The choice could change for someone already approved for X-Perps or deliberately seeking a spot loan. It should not change merely because another brand's international page advertises a larger number that does not describe the Hungarian account.
Hungary removed crypto validation: what changed in 2026?
Hungary's extra crypto-conversion validation regime has been repealed. Act XXXVIII of 2026, published on 30 July, removing the validator framework and the associated criminal-law provisions. The act specifies commencement on the eighth day after publication. For this October review, guides still describing that regime as the current entry requirement are out of date.
The separate SZTFH decree also repealed the detailed validator authorisation and fee rules. This was more than a change to the name of a certificate. It removed a national layer that had complicated the provision of conversion services alongside the European framework.
A legal repeal does not reopen every app
Revolut's Hungarian help page remains a concrete counterexample: it describes crypto services stopping and the December 2025 deadlines for existing holdings. The page does not establish a current reopening. A person who used Revolut for Bitcoin before the interruption should not assume that a working cash account now includes crypto trading again.
The same discipline applies when an exchange advertises European coverage. Check whether the service is currently accepting your Hungarian residence and whether the specific futures product is enabled. A provider can take time to change its operations after a law changes. The practical recommendation is to confirm the new trading account before transferring a balance from somewhere else.
This does not mean treating Hungary as closed to crypto. It means using the present rules and present product, rather than choosing between two outdated extremes: “everything is prohibited” and “every former provider has returned.”
Why Kraken fits a futures account funded from Hungary
Kraken's EEA account requires full verification, a derivatives knowledge assessment and tax-identification information. Hungary is included in its EEA service geography. The derivatives provider identified in the documentation is Payward Europe Digital Solutions (CY) Limited, rather than an assumption that the spot-service licence covers every product.
Its contract range gives the reader a real choice over how to express a crypto trade. Perpetuals are useful when you want to manage the exit yourself while accepting variable funding. A fixed-maturity future provides a defined end date, with its own market price and settlement terms.
The selection should follow the intended pair and duration. For a BTC hedge that will remain open through a known event, compare the dated contract's price with the cost of keeping a perpetual. For a shorter altcoin trade, order-book depth and the allowed position size may be more important than access to a maturity you will never use.
What to check before the first Hungarian deposit
Open the approved derivatives interface and find the actual symbol you intend to trade. Confirm the permitted size, collateral and leverage shown for that account. Kraken's contract tables distinguish margin classes and professional limits; do not copy a professional column into a promise about every retail customer.
Then decide how money will return to your own bank account. Starting with a forint budget often makes a euro-funded account attractive, but the initial currency conversion still has a price. Choose the funding route before pressing a convenient card-purchase button that buys a different asset from the one you wanted to use as collateral.
Kraken is a sensible lead recommendation because those decisions can be checked against dedicated European documents. It does not receive a promise of being cheapest for every Hungarian bank, order size or holding period. The worked forint example below shows where a competing payment quote can matter more than a small commission difference.
OKX X-Perps and Bybit EU solve different trading needs
OKX says all 30 EEA countries are supported for X-Perps, while explaining that activation can vary with regional rollout and account conditions. Hungary therefore belongs in the published coverage, but that is not a claim that we opened and tested a Hungarian account. Treat X-Perps as a conditional alternative until it is visible and enabled for you.
The product's fixed expiry and funding mechanism are relevant to someone comparing it with a conventional perpetual. Look at the chosen crypto contract's specifications rather than assuming the word “perps” means it has no end date. The published European maximum is up to 10x, with the approved account and instrument setting the practical limit.
Bybit EU spot margin has another important detail: borrowing can start when an order reserves more funds than you own, even before that order fills. Its FAQ says borrowing charges already incurred remain payable when an unfilled order is cancelled. That matters to traders who leave leveraged limit orders waiting, because “no fill” does not necessarily mean “no borrowing cost.”
Its current documentation supports cross and portfolio margin rather than isolated margin. The choice is therefore not just between two logos advertising 10x. A reader who specifically wants a futures contract with isolated position management should compare a derivatives product first; a reader intentionally borrowing spot assets can assess Bybit EU's collateral and hourly borrowing terms.
How to fund crypto futures with HUF without overpaying
Hungarian traders face a cost that a euro-area comparison can easily miss: converting forints before trading. Kraken's published cash and collateral schedules provide euro routes; HUF is not listed as a derivatives collateral currency. Selecting HUF as a display currency elsewhere does not establish a HUF futures wallet.
Compare the amount of usable collateral you receive from the same forint budget. If one service advertises a free deposit but uses a worse exchange rate, it may still be more expensive. Ask the same question when withdrawing: how many forints will reach the bank after the exchange, payment and currency-conversion charges?
A 400,000 HUF example
Assume, purely for comparison, an exchange rate of 400 HUF per euro. Before any charges, 400,000 HUF equals €1,000. If one route consumes 1% in conversion and another 0.25%, the usable amounts are €990 and €997.50. The €7.50 difference is 3,000 HUF at the same assumed rate. This is not a live rate or a quote from a named bank.
The example explains why chasing a tiny trading-fee discount can miss the larger initial expense. A euro-denominated balance already held in your own name may avoid a new HUF conversion for that deposit. A forint account may still be convenient if its actual conversion quote is competitive. Neither route wins simply because it has fewer buttons.
Hungarian instant transfers are not the same as euro SEPA
MNB's domestic instant-payment system concerns eligible electronic HUF transfers. SEPA concerns euro transfers, including those sent from Hungary. A domestic transfer arriving in seconds does not establish that a cross-border euro payment or an exchange balance will be credited on the same schedule.
Send the currency specified by the exchange to the beneficiary shown in your verified account. Sending HUF to an EUR-only instruction can introduce a conversion or rejection you did not price. The useful comparison is the complete route, not a claim that every transfer from a Hungarian bank works identically.
For a leveraged position, arrange enough margin before opening it. Money waiting for conversion or transfer is not yet backing the trade. A fresh bank payment may not arrive in time to protect a position that can move continuously.
Compare futures fees in the currency of your budget
Kraken EEA derivatives and OKX X-Perps publish entry-tier commissions of 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker. Those percentages apply to the traded value. They do not become ten times smaller because you supplied only one tenth of that value as margin.
For an illustrative €4,000-equivalent position, a taker entry costs €2 at 0.05%. An unchanged-size taker exit costs another €2. At the assumed 400 HUF per euro used above, the €4 total represents 1,600 HUF. Fees may actually be booked in the product's settlement currency; the forint number here is a budgeting translation, not a promise about the account ledger.
| Cost | What to measure | Why it matters in Hungary |
|---|---|---|
| Funding the account | Forints paid versus usable collateral received. | A currency-conversion spread can exceed the commission saved on a small trade. |
| Opening and closing | Both executions, their traded values and applicable tiers. | The margin deposit alone is not the commission base. |
| Keeping the position | Actual funding or borrowing entries over the holding period. | A perpetual and a borrowed spot position have different carrying costs. |
| Returning money | Cash withdrawal charge and EUR/HUF conversion quote. | A profitable euro balance does not tell you the exact spendable forint amount. |
A fluctuating exchange rate adds another difference between trading performance and household results. Suppose a €1,000 balance becomes €1,050 after trading costs. At 400 HUF per euro initially and 380 on withdrawal, that is 400,000 HUF going in and 399,000 HUF coming back before withdrawal charges. The crypto strategy gained 5% in euros, but the forint result is slightly negative.
That example is not a forecast or a reason to take an additional currency position. It shows why a Hungarian reader should measure performance in the currency they actually need. Record crypto profit separately from the conversion effect; otherwise an exchange can appear better or worse because of movements unrelated to its execution.
Choosing collateral after a USDT-based account
A Hungarian trader returning from a worldwide exchange may already hold USDT. Kraken's current EEA restrictions do not permit USDT deposits or trading, so the old habit of sending USDT to every futures venue is not suitable here. Confirm the destination's supported asset and network before initiating a transfer.
Do not convert the whole balance simply because a token is called a stablecoin. Compare the cost of an accepted transfer asset with the cost of returning to euros, and consider any separate tax record created by the transactions. If the planned account can use your euros directly, an extra token purchase may add complexity without improving the position.
A coin-backed trade also changes the relationship between the position and its collateral. Someone using BTC to back a BTC long is exposed to a decline in both. Someone holding euro collateral still faces the contract's loss, but does not deliberately add the same coin-price exposure through the backing asset. Choose that difference consciously.
If moving an account after a service interruption, transfer only the amount you have decided to allocate. Rebuilding the former balance at maximum leverage is not necessary to test whether the new account fits. Preserve the old transaction exports before closing the previous account; the Hungarian loss history discussed below can remain relevant after the app stops being useful.
Does the 15% Hungarian crypto tax also cover futures?
Hungary's personal-income-tax rules distinguish transactions in crypto-assets from qualifying controlled capital-market transactions, often abbreviated ETÜ in Hungarian. Both can involve a 15% personal-income-tax rate, but they are not one interchangeable calculation. A crypto future must be classified by the contract and provider, rather than by the Bitcoin name on the chart.
Section 67/A addresses qualifying controlled capital-market transactions and includes conditions about the investment service, supervision and documentation. Section 67/C addresses the defined crypto-asset transaction category. A regulated European derivative deserves examination under the financial-instrument rules; it should not automatically inherit a rule written for disposing of coins.
Why this matters before cashing out
NAV's crypto guidance discusses obtaining value outside crypto through the disposal of crypto-assets. That is why readers often hear a simplified “tax when you cash out” explanation. It should not be copied onto every cash-settled derivatives account. A realised contract result can require assessment even while funds remain on the platform.
Suppose you deposit the equivalent of 600,000 HUF, realise 120,000 HUF of futures gains and withdraw 400,000 HUF. It would be wrong to conclude, solely from the withdrawal being smaller than the original deposit, that no taxable result can exist. The relevant transaction category and realised results must be determined first. These numbers illustrate the distinction; they are not a full return calculation.
If an adviser confirms 120,000 HUF as the taxable amount subject to a 15% rate, the corresponding tax is 18,000 HUF. The difficult part is establishing that taxable amount correctly, including relevant losses and charges. Keep the exchange's actual contract documents with the records instead of asking the accountant to classify a screenshot labelled only “crypto profit.”
This guide does not claim a NAV ruling on every Kraken or OKX contract. The practical recommendation is to settle the classification using the specific product before accumulating a year of trades under an assumption that may be wrong.
Keep the loss record even if you change exchanges
Hungary's current crypto-asset tax provisions allow previously reported losses to remain relevant under the tax-equalisation mechanism, subject to the statutory calculation and limits. The amended rules should not be reduced to the older statement that every unused crypto loss simply expires after two years. The current Section 67/C and the applicable return instructions matter.
That does not mean you can freely subtract any past crypto loss from any future income. Controlled capital-market transactions have their own rules, while the crypto-asset category has its own ledger. Keep them separated until the classification is established. A loss on a coin purchase and a loss on a financial contract are not automatically the same kind of deductible item.
A practical handover file contains the year's deposits and withdrawals, closed positions, fees, funding or borrowing entries, and opening and closing balances. Include records from a platform that closed its Hungarian service, not just the exchange you now use. Changing providers does not erase the transactions already made.
Kraken offers account-history exports and separate derivatives logs. OKX provides downloadable order, position and trading histories. Check that the selected date range includes the entire relevant period and that transfers between internal wallets have not been counted twice. A consolidated spreadsheet can help, but keep the original files so a mistaken import can be corrected.
The same care applies to older reported losses. Preserve the submitted return and the unused amount, rather than relying on a tax app to remember how much relief you already claimed. The supporting record should survive both an exchange migration and a change of accountant.
Why is the exchange asking for your Hungarian tax number?
NAV explains that crypto-service providers gained new registration and due-diligence obligations from 1 January 2026 under DAC8. Providers request tax-residence and tax-identification information; for existing clients, NAV describes the relevant declaration being obtained by 1 January 2027. An additional tax-information prompt therefore does not, by itself, mean the platform is preparing to close Hungary again.
Answer according to your actual tax situation. A Hungarian mailing address, nationality and tax residence can be different facts, particularly for people who have moved. Do not omit another applicable tax residence merely to simplify the application. Equally, provider reporting does not guarantee that a prefilled return has correctly classified every futures transaction.
A transfer review is a different process. MNB's 2026 guidance on crypto-asset transfer services addresses information given to customers when transfers are refused, returned or suspended. If an accepted coin transfer is delayed, request the specific reason and the required next step. Repeatedly sending the same asset through another network can make the account history harder to reconcile without resolving the review.
Keep transaction identifiers alongside the exchange record. For a cash withdrawal, keep the beneficiary and payment confirmation; for an on-chain transfer, keep the network and transaction hash. They answer different tracing questions. This is especially helpful after moving a balance from a service that interrupted Hungarian operations.
Budapest, border commuters and Hungarians living abroad
The sources reviewed establish national rules; they do not create one crypto-futures licence for Budapest and another for Debrecen, Szeged or a border town. Local banking choices can differ, but a regional label is not a reason to promise a different maximum leverage.
A Hungarian citizen resident in Austria should examine the Austrian-resident offering. An Austrian citizen resident in Hungary should check the Hungarian situation. For someone commuting across the border, employment location alone is not enough to choose the account country. The relevant residence and tax details need to match the person's actual circumstances.
For a recent arrival in Hungary, a previously functioning global derivatives account may need to migrate to a European product or change its available services. Download its records before making the residence update, then follow the provider's instructions about existing positions. A new set of terms can affect collateral, supported assets and product access, even when the brand and login remain familiar.
If you earn euros but spend mostly forints, funding and performance measurement can also differ from someone paid entirely in HUF. Use the currency you already hold where the approved account supports it, then assess the final result in the currency you need.
Choose a working crypto product, not an outdated promise
The most useful shortlist for Hungary is compact: investigate Kraken for a dedicated European futures account; compare OKX when X-Perps is enabled for you; consider Bybit EU only when borrowed spot trading is the product you actually want.
Before funding, match the provider's legal entity to the service. MNB's public institution search includes cross-border providers as well as domestically supervised firms. A spot-service entry is relevant evidence for that service, but it does not establish every derivatives permission. Check the product agreement alongside the register entry.
Then price the entire trade in forints: initial conversion, entry and exit, the expected holding cost and the return of funds. Finally, retain enough product and transaction information to classify the result properly for NAV. Those steps directly affect which account is useful, what the trade costs and how much of the proceeds remains yours.
