01
The decision

Which crypto exchange is best for leverage in Austria?

Kraken

Kraken's EEA derivatives service is our lead for an eligible Austrian reader who wants to go long or short on crypto futures. It offers a genuine derivatives account with published regional contract specifications. OKX X-Perps is the closest alternative in this review. Both advertise up to 10x for the relevant European offering, and their reviewed standard maker/taker commissions start at the same rates.

Bitpanda Margin belongs in the comparison, but it solves a different problem. It is leveraged spot buying, currently long-only, rather than a futures exchange that lets you trade either direction. Its Austrian tax-withholding support can be valuable, especially for a reader already using the platform. The borrowing cost means that convenience should be priced before choosing it for a longer trade.

Match the account to the trade
ProductThe reason to choose itThe important trade-off
Kraken EEA derivativesLong and short crypto exposure, including perpetual contractsRegional approval and the actual market limits apply
OKX X-PerpsAn alternative European derivatives account with matching starting commissionThe reviewed contracts have a fixed expiry as well as funding
Bitpanda MarginLeveraged long exposure with Austrian withholding supportNot a shorting substitute; borrowing and closing costs matter
Bybit EU spot marginA separate borrowed-asset alternative for eligible existing usersIt is not evidence that the global Bybit futures menu is available

For a trader who specifically wants perpetual futures, Kraken is the cleaner fit among these choices. For someone already approved for X-Perps who finds the intended market suitable, there is no base-fee reason alone to switch. For a long-only Bitpanda user, the decision turns on the holding period and the value of the simpler local tax workflow.

That is a product comparison, not a ranking of company logos. A familiar Austrian brand, a MiCA registration or a large worldwide user count does not tell you whether the account can execute the trade you want. The useful question is what you can actually open, how it charges you, and how you can close it.

Three different products

Perpetual futures, X-Perps and margin: what is the difference?

A long position benefits when the market rises; a short benefits when it falls. Crypto futures let you take either view without buying the underlying coin for withdrawal. That makes them relevant both to a directional trader and to someone trying to offset part of the risk in coins already owned. The backing is still exposed to loss and liquidation if the position moves against it.

Kraken's reviewed EEA contract list contains perpetuals and fixed-maturity futures. A perpetual has no scheduled expiry, although funding can apply while it remains open. A fixed-maturity contract has a stated end date. Select the actual product from the list rather than assuming that everything under a “futures” tab behaves identically.

OKX's X-Perps deliberately combine two features: funding similar to a perpetual and a fixed expiry. Its September specifications show the BTC contract expiring on 4 April 2031, with other contracts carrying their own dates. That is distant enough to be irrelevant to many short trades, but it is still an expiry. We would not describe the product as a never-expiring perpetual just because “Perps” is in the name.

Modernist cobalt and lime stair forms rising, falling and connecting two directions
Choose the direction you need first. Long-only spot margin cannot replace a futures account for a short trade.

Bitpanda's product buys the underlying crypto using borrowed funds. The current help page says short positions are not yet supported and trades in the same asset are combined into one position. Someone planning two independent Bitcoin trades with separate exits therefore needs to consider how that aggregation affects the plan. This is a practical product difference, not a reason to dismiss Bitpanda for users whose needs it does meet.

For a beginner, the simplest distinction is this: are you buying more of a coin with a loan, or trading a contract on its price? The answer influences costs, exits and tax classification. You do not need to master every term in the exchange documentation before deciding which type you want, but the two should not be mixed in one “cheapest futures” table.

03
Commission comparison

Is Kraken cheaper than OKX for an Austrian account?

At the reviewed entry level, both Kraken EEA derivatives and OKX X-Perps quote 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker. A maker order waits in the book for another trader; a taker order immediately matches an available price. The matching starting tariff means that naming one universally cheaper would be misleading.

Imagine a €10,000-equivalent order and an equally sized closing order. If both qualify for maker pricing, commission totals €4-equivalent. If both execute as taker, it totals €10-equivalent. Those figures are the same for the two published starting schedules. They exclude funding, conversion, slippage and any product-specific additional charges, and they use an unchanged position value to make the arithmetic comparable.

What matters when the published rate is tied

For a given trade, inspect the price and quantity available in the order book. If one platform offers a worse fill on your intended size, a tied commission does not produce a tied total cost. A one-off glance also cannot prove that one exchange always has better liquidity. This review establishes the fee tie; it does not pretend that we ran a matched live execution study from Austria.

An existing account's discount can break the tie. Kraken's EEA table reaches its next tier at $2.5 million of rolling 30-day volume, with 0.015% maker and 0.045% taker. That regional threshold should not be replaced by the international schedule. Use the tariff for the account you have, not a global review whose location and customer tier are unclear.

OKX also has its own VIP conditions. A high-volume discount is relevant if you already qualify, not a reason to manufacture extra trades to reach a badge. Additional turnover can cost more than the later saving. For most new readers, comparing the standard tier and the specific market is a better starting point than studying a full institutional fee ladder.

Finally, an instant “buy crypto” quote is not a futures commission. It can include a spread or a different purchase charge. Keep the cost of obtaining collateral separate from the cost of trading the derivative. Otherwise a comparison can accidentally charge one platform for a purchase that the other example never needed.

04
Holding costs

How expensive is Bitpanda Margin over a week?

Bitpanda's published cost material charges financing on the borrowed amount. Its help page distinguishes positions opened before and after 8 July 2026. For newer positions, the stated daily rate is 0.18% for days 1–60, 0.12% for days 61–100, 0.06% for days 101–180 and 0.0312% from day 181. The closing charge is separate. A review that repeats the first daily rate forever misses the later bands.

Consider a simplified €5,000 long position backed by €1,000 of your own money and €4,000 borrowed. At 0.18% per day, the starting borrowing charge is €7.20 per full day. Over seven days, a simple constant-principal estimate is €50.40. A 0.3% closing charge on an unchanged €5,000 position adds €15, producing €65.40 before other effects.

Seven-day illustration: fifty euros forty cents of borrowing plus fifteen euros closing equals sixty-five euros forty cents
Illustrative 5x long: €1,000 own funds, €4,000 borrowed, unchanged €5,000 position. Actual interval billing and debt changes can alter the result.

The example keeps the borrowed principal constant for clarity. Actual charges accrue through the product's intervals and can change the debt. It is not an exact future account statement. Its purpose is to show that the borrowing line is large enough to affect the platform choice; calling the opening trade “free” does not settle the overall price.

Compare that with funding, not with zero

A futures contract can charge funding too. Suppose the same €5,000-equivalent exposure pays a hypothetical 0.01% at three daily funding events. That is €1.50 per day or €10.50 over seven days if the rate and value remain fixed. With €5-equivalent in round-trip taker commission at a 0.05% rate on each side, the illustrative total is €15.50. It is an example, not a live Kraken or OKX funding quote.

Funding can be higher, lower or payable to the other side, and its intervals depend on the contract. The calculation therefore does not prove that futures always cost €49.90 less. It shows why a week-long leveraged long needs a holding-cost comparison. A short intraday trade and a position held for several months should not be evaluated using only the same opening fee.

Our conclusion is specific: Bitpanda's local convenience can justify consideration, but a reader mainly seeking multi-day crypto futures should price Kraken or OKX first. If you prefer Bitpanda, know what you are paying for. Tax support and a familiar workflow are real benefits; they do not erase financing charges.

A less obvious cost when backing a trade with euros

Kraken’s EEA fee page also identifies possible conversion charges and interest on losses not covered by USD or equivalent stablecoins. In plain terms, an account can hold enough total collateral to keep a trade open while still having a shortfall in the currency used to account for a loss. That shortfall can create an additional charge. The maker/taker rate alone does not describe it.

For an Austrian reader depositing euros, inspect the account’s fee breakdown when comparing a longer losing position with an otherwise identical USD-backed example. Do not convert the entire balance automatically: compare the conversion quote with the actual charge and the collateral you intend to keep. This is a question to settle for the specific account, not a claim that euros are unsuitable for futures trading.

Retail leverage

Can retail traders use 10x in Austria?

The reviewed Kraken Austrian offering and OKX X-Perps documentation describe up to 10x for eligible users. That is a product ceiling, not an instruction to use 10x on every trade or a guarantee that every asset and position size receives it. The order ticket and regional contract specification remain the relevant limits.

Do not confuse this with a general claim that every leveraged crypto product in Austria must use the same maximum. Futures, spot borrowing and other financial products have different structures and access conditions. This guide focuses on the crypto exchange products actually documented above, instead of sending a reader looking for perpetuals through unrelated traditional brokerage products.

With €800 supporting €4,000 of exposure, a 2% adverse price move is about €80 before fees: around 10% of the starting backing. At €8,000 of exposure it is about €160, or 20%. That simple comparison explains the consequence of moving from 5x to 10x more clearly than a large maximum-leverage badge does.

Liquidation happens according to the platform's maintenance requirements, collateral value and charges. It is not safe to assume that a 10x position always survives exactly a 10% move. The available buffer changes as the position changes. Use the displayed liquidation estimate as an account-specific indicator, not as a guaranteed execution price.

Long and short are different from buying and selling coins

If you want to speculate on a falling Bitcoin price, closing a spot holding is not the same as opening a short. Selling a holding ends that exposure; a short creates exposure that can gain if the price falls and lose if it rises. That is why Bitpanda's current long-only margin offering is not our answer to an Austrian reader asking where to short Bitcoin.

For a trader who already owns Bitcoin and wants a temporary hedge, matching the intended position size matters more than choosing the maximum multiple. A hedge can still have funding costs and its own liquidation risk, especially if the collateral and the original holding are in different places. It should not be sold as a way to make the underlying portfolio risk-free.

06
Account activation

Why can I buy Bitcoin but not open futures?

Buying crypto and receiving derivatives access are separate account steps. Kraken's EEA eligibility page requires a verified account, an assessment of trading knowledge and experience, and the relevant tax-identification information. For a new account, confirm the derivatives service is enabled before sending money specifically for a leveraged trade.

OKX similarly requires verification, completion of the appropriateness assessment and no unresolved account restrictions. Its help page notes that rollout timing can differ across EEA locations even when a country is supported. An Austrian residence alone therefore does not mean the futures menu appears immediately on every account.

If an assessment is not passed, OKX applies a waiting period shown in the account. Support cannot simply remove that wait. The useful response is to understand the missing concepts and use the official process, not to copy a set of answers from social media or switch to a false residential address. The assessment is meant to reflect your own understanding.

For existing OKX users, the provider also says that an account-mode change can be blocked by activity such as open positions, outstanding orders or running bots. That is a different issue from Austria being excluded. Read the actual message before opening another account or moving collateral unnecessarily. Do not close a live position blindly just to remove a setup prompt; establish what the transition requires first.

Which account details genuinely matter locally?

Use your current Austrian residence and the correct tax information. A foreign passport does not make you a foreign resident for the exchange. Likewise, a German-language website does not guarantee that you have been assigned the Austrian or EEA service. The entity and product shown in the account terms are more informative than the language selector.

This review does not identify separate exchange-eligibility rules for Vienna, Graz, Linz, Salzburg or Innsbruck. We have not created artificial city-by-city recommendations. Your state within Austria is not presented as a way around an account restriction. A cross-border move, such as becoming resident outside the EEA, is a materially different situation and should be reflected in the provider's records.

07
Euros and stablecoins

Do you need USDT to trade crypto futures from Austria?

No universal USDT purchase is required. The right collateral depends on the product and the account. Starting with a tutorial written for an international USDT account can add an unnecessary conversion—or send you toward an asset your EEA exchange no longer supports for trading.

Kraken's regional policy, updated on 30 September 2026, excludes USDT deposits and trading for EEA clients. An Austrian customer should therefore not transfer old Tether funds based on an international account tutorial. This is a restriction on Kraken's regional service, not a statement that possessing USDT is universally illegal in Austria.

For an Austrian resident starting with euros, inspect the enabled bank-deposit method and accepted collateral in the regional account first. If the account supports the money you already hold, an extra coin purchase may solve nothing. Conversely, if a specific product needs another settlement balance, read the conversion quote before assuming the process is free.

Bitpanda's current margin instructions describe automatic conversion to EURCV at a zero conversion fee for that step. That does not make all margin costs zero; the separate borrowing and closing charges remain. It does mean the user does not need to reproduce a global USDT-futures tutorial to open the product.

Three labels to verify together: regional account, supported collateral and the enabled crypto contract
A familiar exchange logo is only the starting point. Match the account, funding asset and trading product.

An Austrian bank transfer and a blockchain transfer also have different failure modes. For the bank method, match the account holder, beneficiary and reference supplied by the provider. For crypto, match the asset and supported network. Do not guess a network merely because the token ticker matches. A small initial transfer can confirm the path, but it does not replace checking the destination's requirements.

Keep the withdrawal plan consistent with your starting money. If the eventual goal is euros back to an Austrian bank, price the conversion and EUR withdrawal rather than treating an on-exchange dollar balance as the final result. There is no need to add a peer-to-peer cash sale simply because an unrelated global guide uses one.

08
Austrian tax differences

Are crypto futures profits always taxed at 27.5% in Austria?

No. Austria's familiar 27.5% crypto rate should not be pasted onto every futures result. The BMF distinguishes income from crypto assets from categories such as non-securitised derivatives. For the latter, ordinary income-tax treatment can apply unless the conditions for an equivalent voluntary withholding arrangement are met. The actual instrument and arrangement need identifying before selecting a rate.

This distinction is one reason that Bitpanda Margin's spot-based structure matters. Bitpanda explicitly lists Margin Trading among the products for which it automatically withholds Austrian tax. Its current FAQ separately identifies products without that automatic treatment. “Bitpanda does my taxes” is therefore too broad unless the statement is tied to the product used.

For a personal futures account elsewhere, do not assume the exchange has settled Austrian tax merely because it asks for a TIN or supplies a transaction export. Those functions are different. Check whether any withholding actually applies to the product, retain the trading records, and establish the treatment with someone qualified to assess the Austrian return. This page explains the decision point rather than inventing one universal personal tax bill.

The purchase history can change an automatic deduction

Bitpanda's FAQ says missing acquisition information can lead to a lump-sum assumption that 50% of proceeds are gains, with 27.5% withheld on that assumed gain. That can differ considerably from the real gain on previously purchased coins. For example, 27.5% of an assumed €500 gain on €1,000 proceeds is €137.50. That is an illustration of the stated withholding method, not a conclusion that the actual gain was €500.

Retain purchase records when moving crypto into the platform, especially if the coins came from several exchanges. An incoming blockchain transaction proves movement, but does not by itself identify the original euro purchase cost. The important record is the acquisition history associated with those assets, not a new cost invented from the deposit day's price.

Can losses elsewhere offset gains automatically?

Do not expect one exchange to know the results in another account. The BMF's loss-relief guidance also distinguishes automatic crypto loss netting from offsets against other capital-income categories. A combined personal return can involve rules that an individual platform's automatic process does not handle. Keep each product's result identifiable rather than merging everything into a single “crypto profit” number.

For account selection, this makes tax support a genuine convenience factor, but not a substitute for comparing the trade itself. If you need a short position, choosing a long-only product for easier administration does not fulfil the trading objective. If you want a straightforward leveraged long and value withholding support, Bitpanda can remain relevant despite the higher illustrative holding cost.

09
Other names in the directory

What about Bybit EU, KuCoin EU and decentralised exchanges?

Bybit EU's current help centre documents spot margin as a borrowed-asset service, including long and short use cases. It is not the same as the global Bybit derivatives catalogue. Its FAQ also says isolated margin is not supported for that product; the supported modes are cross and portfolio margin. That can matter if you expected each position to have a separate, isolated collateral allocation.

An existing Bybit EU user can investigate the enabled borrowing product on those terms. We have not elevated it above the two derivatives leads for someone specifically searching for crypto futures in Austria. The distinction is about the instrument, not an assumption that a local or European website has fewer useful features overall.

KuCoin EU needs a separate current-status check. The FMA's 18 May 2026 notice lifted one new-business prohibition but explicitly said commencement of business remained prohibited because other supervisory conditions were still unmet. That notice is not evidence of a full operational reopening. This review did not locate a later official release establishing that the obstacle had been removed, so KuCoin EU is not a deposit recommendation in the shortlist.

The directory also retains decentralised platforms as coverage records. They are not promoted here as Austrian-regulated alternatives or as a way around regional product restrictions. A wallet connection does not establish a regulated retail offering, and an interface loading in a browser is not a complete access assessment. Readers who want a documented European account have clearer candidates above.

10
Put the comparison to use

Which choice fits your first actual trade?

For a planned Bitcoin short, evaluate Kraken EEA derivatives first and OKX X-Perps alongside it. Compare the enabled BTC contract, the entry and exit prices for your order size, and the current funding. At the starting commission tier, the fee tie means the better fit comes from the contract and execution conditions rather than a tiny advertised percentage advantage.

For a week-long bullish trade on an asset Bitpanda supports, compare its actual borrowing quote with the funding estimate on a suitable futures contract. Then decide whether the local withholding workflow is worth the difference to you. The worked example is deliberately transparent so you can replace the assumed position size, holding period and rates with the numbers in your own account.

For a first-time derivatives user, practise reading the position value and closing controls before increasing exposure. Knowing how much was deposited is not enough: you should be able to identify the amount exposed to price changes and the balance available after closing. A clean, understandable trading workflow is a more useful benefit than a long list of advanced features you will not use.

Local FAQ

Other reader questions

01Does a MiCA licence automatically cover crypto futures?

No. A crypto-asset service authorisation does not by itself establish permission for every derivative. Identify the entity and authorisation attached to the particular futures product.

02Which Austrian shortlist supports a leveraged Bitcoin short?

Kraken EEA derivatives and OKX X-Perps are the relevant comparisons, subject to their regional eligibility checks. The Bitpanda Margin product reviewed is long-only. Choose the contract that supports the intended direction before comparing its fees or the convenience of Austrian tax withholding.

03Can I compare a global Bybit futures tutorial with my Bybit EU account?

Only after checking that the same product exists in your regional account. The EU spot-margin documentation describes borrowed-asset trading, not automatic access to every global futures market.

04Does Bitpanda deduct Austrian tax from trades I make on another futures exchange?

No. Its withholding support concerns the covered products on its own service. It does not settle the tax on a separate Kraken or OKX account. Austria also distinguishes crypto-asset income from non-securitised derivatives, so the familiar 27.5% crypto rate should not be applied to every futures result without identifying the contract's treatment.

05Why might a week-long Bitpanda Margin trade cost more than an Austrian futures account?

Bitpanda charges interest on the borrowed balance and a separate closing fee. Kraken and OKX derivatives have trading commissions and product-specific funding instead. For a week-long long position, compare the displayed borrowing quote with the funding estimate for the same exposure; Austrian withholding support may be convenient, but it is not a fee discount.

06Does Bybit EU let an Austrian customer isolate each spot-margin position?

The reviewed Bybit EU documentation supports cross and portfolio margin rather than isolated margin for that service. It also describes borrowed-asset trading, not the global futures catalogue. If separate collateral for each trade is central to your plan, compare that requirement with the European derivatives products before choosing the regional Bybit account.
