Which crypto futures exchange makes sense in Monaco?
Kraken is the strongest starting point here for a Monaco resident who wants a dedicated crypto-futures account alongside euro funding. Its international derivatives eligibility policy does not exclude Monaco. That is the basis for including it, subject to identity and account approval; it is not a claim that Kraken holds a Monaco financial-services licence. The useful comparison is with international crypto exchanges, not a list of wealth managers that happen to have offices in Monte Carlo.
Bybit offers a different proposition: a trader concentrating on USDT perpetuals may prefer its contract selection and higher published ceilings on particular markets. Monaco is not on its general excluded-jurisdiction list either. For someone already holding eligible crypto, that can be a practical alternative. Someone starting from a Monaco euro bank account should give greater weight to the bank-deposit and withdrawal methods actually available to their verified account.
| Exchange | Why it belongs here | What the evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Kraken international derivatives | Perpetual and dated crypto contracts; Monaco absent from the derivatives exclusion list | Automatic approval, a Monaco licence or universal access to its highest leverage |
| Bybit international | USDT futures and selected higher-leverage markets; Monaco absent from general exclusions | That every fiat service, asset or document is accepted |
| An EEA-only futures account | Relevant if you actually live in France or another EEA country | Eligibility merely because your Monaco address uses euros |
We put Kraken ahead for a euro-funded resident comparing a complete trading relationship, including taking money back out. Bybit deserves a closer look when the specific international perpetual market is the deciding factor. Neither ranking should be read as an instruction to move funds before verification. A successful spot-account registration alone does not establish that the separate derivatives service has opened.
Can you get 50x or 150x from a Monaco address?
Monaco is outside the EEA, despite its close relationship with France and its use of the euro. This matters to crypto leverage because the international and European versions of an exchange can offer different products. Copying a French futures limit into a Monaco guide would be as misleading as applying a global advertising banner to a customer living across the border in Beausoleil.
Kraken's international contract specifications publish maximums up to 50x on selected crypto markets, with lower limits on others. Those limits also depend on position size and the account. They are useful for narrowing the choice: an international BTC trader and an EEA client should not assume they are looking at the same contract conditions just because both use Kraken Pro. Use the regional contract document tied to the approved account.
Bybit's August 2026 announcement raised selected BTCUSDT and ETHUSDT ceilings to 150x. That does not make 150x a Monaco legal entitlement or an appropriate setting for every position. It does explain why Bybit may interest a reader whose priority is access to those named contracts. A smaller altcoin market, a larger position or an account restriction can produce a different limit.
For a Monaco resident who wants to retain existing BTC rather than first sell it, Kraken's distinction between coin-collateral and multi-collateral contracts is also relevant. The product choice changes which balance supports the trade. Someone whose spending and bank balance are in euros may instead prefer an account funded in cash. Compare the actual collateral menu rather than assuming every crypto balance in the app can support every futures position.
Does Monaco's crypto framework cover these exchanges?
Monaco has its own rules. Law 1.528 of 7 July 2022 established a framework for digital assets, while financial activities and marketing also sit within Monaco's financial-services regime. An exchange's authorisation elsewhere does not automatically prove permission to solicit clients in the Principality. Equally, a resident's ability to apply to an international platform is a different question from whether that platform is established locally.
The CCAF's material on marketing financial products is relevant when someone approaches you with a managed trading service, a futures account or a supposedly exclusive Monaco allocation. Ask which named legal entity is making that offer and whether its claimed permission covers the activity. A hotel presentation, French-language salesperson or Monaco telephone number does not establish that status. The local register is linked with the regulatory sources below.
There is also a current change to follow: Bill 1131, received by the National Council on 6 August 2026, proposes a new crypto-asset service-provider framework. The Council still lists it among bills in progress in the material reviewed for this page. It would be premature to describe the proposal as an operational licensing regime or to label international partners authorised under a law not yet shown as enacted.
For the reader choosing an exchange today, that leaves a clear distinction. Kraken and Bybit are international candidates based on their published customer policies; our comparison is not a directory of Monaco-licensed crypto-futures providers. A claimed local permission should be checked against the relevant company and activity. We have not found a public basis for assigning a special Monaco-wide 100x or 200x maximum.
Foreign passport, Monaco home: which country counts?
A move to Monaco can change which exchange entity serves the account. The documents and the treatment of existing positions matter more than the nationality printed on a second passport.
Moving from France, Italy or the United Kingdom
A genuine move can require an exchange to reassess the account's regional service. That is particularly important if the old account was an EEA derivatives account or a UK account with professional-client restrictions. The result is not necessarily a simple address edit that leaves every open contract untouched. The provider must determine the new service relationship and any position-transfer or closure requirements.
Make the account change before planning new positions around international limits. Save the old trade and balance history, since a migration can split reporting between account versions. This is a practical transition issue for someone relocating, not a reason for a Monaco resident to pretend they still live at a previous French address. Nor should a short holiday in Monaco be treated as a change of permanent residence.
Documents a new resident can actually provide
For a new Monaco resident, the useful evidence is a current residence card, passport and recent record of the actual home address. A property reservation or a family-office mailing address may not establish occupancy. These are the residence records to reconcile before requesting international derivatives access.
Working in Monaco while living in France or Italy
Someone living in Menton, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin or Beausoleil and commuting into Monaco should use the comparison for French residents. A Monaco employer, work permit or salary account does not relocate the home across the border. The same principle applies to a commuter living in Italy. This distinction can change the available futures entity and product, even when the daily journey is only a few kilometres.
Funding futures from a Monaco bank account
Monaco participates in SEPA. Kraken's published SEPA information explicitly includes it, unlike some newer participants still missing from the same help table. This provides a concrete reason to investigate Kraken for a euro-funded account. The deposit instructions displayed for the verified customer remain the authority for the beneficiary, reference and supported method; a general country listing is not a bank's promise to accept every payment.
Kraken publishes several euro-deposit methods with different minimums and processing conditions, including methods with no exchange deposit fee. The sending bank may still charge. For a Monaco customer, the meaningful cost is therefore the quoted bank charge plus any platform charge and any conversion needed for the selected contract. A euro transfer avoids an initial currency conversion only if the trading route actually retains euros as intended.
There is no sound basis for ranking all Monaco banks by crypto-friendliness from their names alone. Private banks and retail relationships can have different account conditions, and the recipient matters. A transfer to an exchange in your own name is different from paying a personal account advertised by an intermediary. Use the real recipient details and an accurate payment description; a disguised transfer creates problems when you later need to explain the proceeds.
Why an existing stablecoin balance changes the comparison
A resident already holding eligible USDT may not need the same euro-entry service as someone starting from a bank balance. In that case Bybit's relevant international contract and supported blockchain can be more important than SEPA. Still compare the eventual sale and withdrawal route into the currency you actually spend. The cheapest way into a position is not necessarily the cheapest complete path back to your bank.
Bybit's fiat table is method-specific: it names Monaco in its PLN SWIFT restrictions. That should not be rewritten as a blanket ban on every currency or on crypto trading. Conversely, Monaco being absent from another payment restriction is not proof that every local card works. This is why our main comparison distinguishes the futures account from each cash service instead of labelling the whole exchange simply available or unavailable.
What would a Monaco trader actually pay?
Kraken's published starting derivatives execution rates are 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker; Bybit's standard perpetual/futures rates are 0.02% and 0.055%. Account tiers can change those figures. A limit order is not automatically charged as a maker: it must add liquidity rather than immediately execute against an existing order. Use the charge actually applicable to the order, not the label chosen on the form.
For a simplified position with $10,000 of trade value on entry and the same value on exit, two taker executions cost $10 at 0.05% or $11 at 0.055%. This is an arithmetic comparison, not a forecast of the final trading bill. It excludes funding, spread, price movement, collateral conversion and bank withdrawal costs. The one-dollar difference does not justify choosing an account with an unsuitable funding or cash-out method.
For somebody trading less frequently but retaining a position for longer, the funding history of the intended market can outweigh that difference. For someone depositing and withdrawing a small amount from a bank with a substantial fixed transfer charge, the bank cost can dominate instead. These are two different Monaco readers; neither is served by a ranking based solely on the lowest headline commission.
Save the exchange's executed-trade and funding records, not only a screenshot of a positive balance. A Monaco bank examining a large incoming transfer can distinguish the original capital from trading gains much more readily when the chain is documented. The exchange account and receiving bank account should belong to the appropriate customer; a family-office arrangement requires the correct business or authorised relationship, not casual use of an employee's personal account.
Are crypto futures profits tax-free in Monaco?
Monaco generally does not impose personal income tax on individuals resident there. The crucial exception for many readers is the France–Monaco tax convention: French nationals covered by its rules can remain subject to French income tax on worldwide income as though resident in France. The official French guidance also explains exceptions, including particular long-established residence situations. “Monaco resident” is therefore not enough to promise every reader zero tax.
A French citizen who has just moved to Monaco should not assume a second non-Monégasque nationality cancels the treaty. Nor should they treat the special rules for people born and continuously resident in Monaco as a general newcomer exemption. The relevant treaty status comes before deciding how the trading result is reported. The French tax guidance linked below is the appropriate starting point for that classification.
The exchange country does not decide the tax result
For an illustrative case, two eligible customers could trade the same international BTC contract from Monaco and have different reporting obligations because of their nationality and tax circumstances. That does not require the exchange to offer different markets to them. It means the account-access answer and the tax answer must be kept separate. A foreign platform's failure to withhold tax is not evidence that no tax can be due.
US citizens and other people retaining overseas tax obligations need a further check. The IRS states that US citizens and resident aliens abroad generally remain subject to US reporting on worldwide income. A Monaco address does not remove that obligation. Do not confuse a tax rule based on citizenship with the separate question of which trading service may accept the customer; both have to be satisfied.
Someone planning a move chiefly around futures profits should establish the effective residence change before trading on an assumed exemption. Monaco's tax-residence certificate procedure is not simply a receipt for purchasing property. Keep the dates, residence evidence and trading records for the transition year. A company incorporated in Monaco also requires its own tax analysis; the personal-resident treatment should not be copied onto a business trading account.
