Margin Call vs Liquidation in Crypto

Jump to sections

Short answer

A margin call warns that your account needs more support. Liquidation means the platform has started forcing a reduction or close. Do not count on a warning or a grace period: fast price moves can take an account straight into liquidation.

Visit Kraken Futures

Kraken Derivatives outside the US separates maintenance checks from its Equity Protection Process. That distinction helps you identify whether an account is receiving a warning, losing order capacity or already undergoing intervention.

A margin warning arrived. Which account needs attention?

Open the trading account directly and identify the currency, contract and margin mode named in the message. A BTC perpetual warning, a spot-margin borrowing notice and a crypto-loan repayment reminder can all mention margin. They do not describe the same obligation. Responding to the wrong account can leave the relevant position unchanged even after you move money.

Next, distinguish a warning from a completed event. A low-margin notification reports a condition. An order-rejection message says an instruction was not accepted. A liquidation execution changes your position. An assignment notice can arrive after the exposure has already been transferred. The action you can still take depends on which of these has occurred, not on how alarming the message sounds.

Read the verb before actingThese are message categories, not a required sequence every exchange follows.Scroll sideways for all columns.
What the message saysWhat to inspectWhat it does not establish
Low margin / risk warningCurrent risk measure and affected accountA guaranteed response window
Insufficient margin / order rejectedOpening-order requirement and free capacityThat an existing trade was liquidated
Order canceled by risk controlRemaining positions and protective ordersThat exposure has disappeared
Liquidation / assignment completedExecuted quantity and current positionThat the original trade can still be rescued

Do not use an old email balance as the current account balance. Between the event and your reading it, prices, funding, open orders and other positions may have changed. The message helps locate the problem; the current account determines the available response. If you operate subaccounts, check the account identifier as carefully as the coin symbol.

A margin-alert bell is separate from the BTC perpetual position it warns about
A notification conveys information; it does not suspend the exchange’s risk controls.

Do crypto futures exchanges send a margin call before liquidation?

OKX multi-currency cross margin: a warning and a separate intervention test

OKX documents a warning when its maintenance margin ratio is at or below 300%, with the warning parameter subject to change. At or below 100%, its pre-liquidation process cancels relevant orders; if the ratio remains insufficient, forced liquidation follows. Those are account conditions, not minutes on a countdown. The page describes a system warning without establishing a guaranteed delivery time or a universal email channel.

OKX’s ratio puts adjusted equity above maintenance margin plus liquidation fees. Lower is worse. A usage-style ratio with the requirement above the eligible balance moves the other way. Never copy a percentage from one platform into another platform’s alert settings simply because both labels contain “maintenance margin.”

Kraken Derivatives: an automatic equity test, with some emails describing events already completed

Kraken’s Equity Protection Process activates when equity falls below maintenance. Its documentation explicitly describes email notifications for assignment and for counterparties affected by an unwind. These are not a promise of a pre-liquidation call. The process is specific to Kraken Derivatives outside the US and should not be replaced with thresholds taken from Kraken spot-margin articles.

Bybit: a borrowing-limit notice can describe a different clock

Bybit’s general UTA borrowing documentation gives an email reminder when borrowing reaches its limit and describes delayed auto-repayment after 24 continuous hours at or above that limit. It expressly excludes the delay when account MMR reaches 100%: that condition triggers immediate auto-repayment. A borrowing reminder therefore cannot be read as permission to keep an under-margined derivatives account open for another day.

The useful comparison is what triggers a message, what triggers intervention and which product those rules cover. An exchange offering several notification channels does not necessarily offer a longer period to act. Likewise, a platform can restrict new risk before it starts closing existing risk. These are separate capabilities when you assess the account controls. Portfolio-margin accounts also have their own product rules; the general borrowing example is not a universal PM intervention threshold.

Why this comparison does not publish one universal alert percentage

Product documentation checked 8 October 2026. The OKX comparison concerns multi-currency cross margin. Kraken EPP excludes Kraken Derivatives US. The Bybit timing example concerns borrowing-limit auto-repayment, not a futures grace period.

Older indexed UTA FAQ copies show notification thresholds that are not visible in the current general FAQ response. This guide does not elevate that older search extract into a verified current alert promise.

Why can a 120% margin figure be healthy on one screen and critical on another?

Consider a simplified account with 720 USDT of eligible equity and a 600 USDT maintenance requirement. Dividing equity by the requirement gives 120%. Dividing the requirement by equity gives about 83.33%. Both describe the same 120 USDT cushion. One falls toward 100% as losses increase; the other rises toward 100%.

If equity falls to 660 while the requirement stays at 600, the coverage figure becomes 110% and the usage figure becomes about 90.91%. The remaining cushion is only 60. Neither the ten percentage points in one display nor the roughly nine in the other translates directly into a ten-percent move in BTC. They are account ratios, not price-distance measurements.

This illustration omits fees, deductions and other platform-specific adjustments. Its purpose is to show why the numerator matters. On the actual screen, read the definition attached to the field. “Available margin,” “margin balance” and “maintenance ratio” are not interchangeable values, even when the interface presents them in the same summary.

For a multi-position account, a single contract’s estimated liquidation price is also incomplete evidence. A second trade can lose value or the collateral itself can fall while the first contract barely moves. Use the account measure for an account-wide warning, and the position’s own allocation for a genuinely isolated warning. This avoids trying to repair the wrong number.

Understand the separate tests for opening a position and keeping it open

Cancel an order, add collateral or reduce the position—which changes the problem?

These actions change different parts of the account. Canceling an unfilled opening order removes a future commitment. Crediting eligible collateral increases the resources supporting risk. Executing a closing order reduces the risk itself, while also realizing profit or loss and paying any applicable costs. They should not be presented as three equivalent buttons.

Three changes to the same accountEach branch starts with 720 USDT equity and 600 USDT maintenance. Fixed prices; illustrative requirements.

Cancel pending entries

720 equity − 600 maintenance

120 USDT cushion

Opening capacity changes. Existing exposure stays.

Credit 200 USDT

920 equity − 600 maintenance

320 USDT cushion

More capital supports the same position.

Close half; pay 5 USDT

715 equity − 300 maintenance

415 USDT cushion

Less exposure remains; equity is slightly lower.

Canceling an opening order releases capacity, not new money

Suppose the simplified account above has 720 USDT equity, 700 required for existing positions at their opening-margin rate and another 300 reserved for pending opening orders. Its opening-capacity calculation is now 280 below zero. Canceling the pending orders restores 20 of free capacity, but equity is still 720 and maintenance on the positions is still 600. The order reservation disappeared; the market exposure did not.

That can solve an order-capacity problem without creating a new cushion against existing position losses. Some real systems also include potential order losses and currency-specific reserves, so their risk measures can improve after cancellation. Inspect the revised values rather than assuming that every cancellation either fixes liquidation risk or has no effect at all.

Adding margin keeps the trade and commits more capital to it

Crediting 200 USDT of fully eligible collateral to this same margin pool raises equity from 720 to 920, assuming no intervening price or cost changes. With maintenance still 600, the cushion becomes 320. The position remains exactly as large. The improvement comes from additional resources at risk, not from a reduction in how much the trade gains or loses per price move.

After funding an isolated trade, assign the money to that position if required. For cross margin, confirm the eligible account balance increased. Funds already supporting the account cannot be counted again as a fresh contribution.

Reducing exposure changes the next loss, but execution matters

For a separate simplified illustration, close half the exposure at the same price used to value the account, pay 5 USDT in total execution charges and assume maintenance scales exactly with quantity. Equity becomes 715 and maintenance falls from 600 to 300. The cushion is 415. Equity is slightly lower, yet the remaining position requires much less support.

Actual tiers and fills can change that outcome. The choice is still intelligible without a complicated formula: adding collateral retains the original exposure; reducing contracts retains less exposure. If your reason for holding the original size is no longer valid, merely funding it for longer does not address that decision. If you reduce, inspect completed quantity rather than treating the submitted quantity as already closed.

Follow the position and balance after a partial close

Does a pending crypto deposit count toward margin?

A transaction broadcast on a blockchain is not the same as a credited exchange balance. Kraken’s deposit guidance explains that the receiving platform waits for the required confirmations; requirements vary with asset and network. Do not turn an estimated confirmation time into a liquidation-rescue promise. The margin engine can evaluate the account before the transfer becomes usable.

Bybit deposits arrive in the Funding Account, while trading uses the Unified Trading Account. Complete the internal transfer and any isolated allocation before counting that deposit as support for the affected position.

Think of four separate checks: the transfer was sent, the exchange credited it, the relevant trading account received it, and that asset is eligible collateral in the selected mode. Any missing check can explain why a deposit did not change the risk display. This is especially relevant when a familiar ticker exists on several networks or a collateral setting is disabled.

There is no need to make an emergency transfer unnecessarily complicated by introducing another coin, bridge or conversion just to chase a nominally faster route. A transfer path you have not previously checked adds failure points precisely when time is limited. Existing eligible funds in the correct account and an executed reduction are observable account changes; an incoming transfer is still conditional.

If the deposit finally arrives after the position has already closed, it does not reverse the liquidation. Reconcile it as a separate credit. Do not reopen the same size automatically just because the intended top-up is now present: the fill prices, costs and remaining account balance have changed. The old order plan is no longer an accurate description of the account.

What if the exchange blocks new orders but still lets me close?

An opening restriction does not necessarily block a valid reducing order. In hedge mode, identify the position side as well as Buy or Sell; the wrong combination can request more exposure when you intend to close.

OKX may cancel orders during pre-liquidation checks. If an exit fails afterward, inspect its current state and rejection reason. Quantity increments, stale reduce-only size and insufficient collateral require different corrections.

Optional: notification and automated-response controls

Enable the delivery channel you actually monitor. A hidden push notification does not change the exchange’s maintenance rule.

An automated warning handler should read the current position before reducing it and tolerate duplicate messages without submitting duplicate orders.

Margin-warning questions that need a precise answer

Can a position be liquidated before I receive a warning email?

Yes. Do not treat delivery of an email as a condition that the liquidation engine must wait for. Kraken’s documented assignment emails can describe an event already completed; OKX’s warning threshold is an account condition, not a response deadline.

Does an “insufficient margin” rejection mean I have lost the trade?

No. It can mean the proposed opening order lacks capacity while an existing position remains above maintenance. Check whether the message refers to the new instruction, a restriction or a completed liquidation fill.

Will canceling a stop-loss free margin safely?

Do not group protective exits with pending entries. Canceling an entry can remove an unused opening commitment; canceling an exit can leave the existing exposure without that instruction. First identify the purpose and position side of the order.

Is a margin call a demand to repay an exchange loan?

Not necessarily. A warning about collateral supporting perpetual futures is different from a notice about an actual borrowed currency. A unified account can contain both. The liability record and the named product determine whether repayment is required.

Does Bybit’s borrowing delay give my futures position 24 hours?

No. Its documented borrowing-limit delay does not apply when account MMR reaches 100%. Do not carry timing from the borrowing-limit scenario into a derivatives liquidation or immediate auto-repayment scenario.

Why did my deposit arrive without changing the position’s risk?

Possible causes include credit to a different account, an isolated allocation that was not increased, an ineligible collateral asset, or further market losses while funds moved. Compare the credited trading balance and current risk measure rather than only the transaction status.
