Portfolio Margin vs Unified Margin: What Actually Changes

Jump to sections

Short answer

A unified account brings products and balances together. Portfolio margin can reduce the collateral required when the exchange recognizes that your positions offset each other. It helps only if its rules recognize your actual hedge; unrelated positions can still consume more margin.

Visit Bybit

Bybit’s unified account can share eligible balances, while portfolio margin applies a separate stress model to qualifying positions. It is relevant when an established hedge may use collateral more efficiently; compare the requirement again after removing one leg.

What changes when balances share a unified trading account?

Imagine holding a profitable ETH perpetual and a losing BTC perpetual while cash sits unused in another product wallet. Combining eligible balances can make those resources available to the account that needs them. It can remove a manual transfer step. Whether the risk engine also reduces the combined margin requirement is a second question.

Bybit’s UTA offers isolated, cross and portfolio modes within the same account structure. Its selected mode applies at account level. Thus “I use UTA” does not identify how the trader’s positions are margined. You still need to know the active mode before interpreting a screenshot, an available-balance figure or another trader’s claim about capital efficiency.

Account and risk lenses separate the grouping of balances from the assessment of opposing crypto positions
Shared funds answer where support comes from. The risk model determines how much support the positions require.

P&L netting combines gains and losses in equity. Portfolio offsets instead reduce the requirement when the engine recognizes positions that respond differently to a market shock. An account can receive either effect, or both.

Bybit’s asset page also distinguishes total equity from margin balance after collateral recognition. A single dollar total on the screen is therefore insufficient for a comparison. For the same positions and prices, compare eligible equity, initial margin and maintenance margin. Otherwise, a change in valuation can be mistaken for a benefit from the new risk model.

For example, an account showing $15,000 of gross assets is not necessarily better funded than another showing $14,500 of adjusted equity. Those labels may measure different things. Use the same basis on both sides before deciding that one mode has created an extra $500. Switching a setting does not manufacture money.

Two $100,000 portfolios can react very differently to the same move

Consider two portfolios with $100,000 of gross exposure at the starting prices. Portfolio A owns 0.5 BTC at $100,000 and shorts a linear perpetual equivalent to 0.5 BTC at the same price. Each leg represents $50,000. Portfolio B holds a $50,000 BTC perpetual long and a $50,000 ETH perpetual long. Their exposure totals match, but their directions do not.

In a synchronized 20% rally, A gains $10,000 on spot and loses $10,000 on the short. B gains $10,000 on each long. In a synchronized 20% fall, A’s price effects still offset while B loses $20,000. Portfolio A has lower sensitivity to that particular common move, even though both contain two positions and the same starting gross amount.

Same starting gross exposure. Different response. Each leg starts at $50,000. Change the price scenario.

Spot and perpetual valuations move together; ETH also falls 20%.

A · BTC spot + BTC short

Spot holding
−$10,000
Perpetual short
+$10,000

Net price P&L $0

B · BTC long + ETH long

BTC perpetual long
−$10,000
ETH perpetual long
−$10,000

Net price P&L −$20,000

Price effects only. No funding, fees, interest or collateral discounts. A zero result is not a zero-margin quote.

Now let the spot BTC valuation fall by 20% while the perpetual mark falls by only 18%. A’s spot holding loses $10,000, but its short gains only $9,000. The pair loses $1,000 before any costs. A hedge against BTC direction is not automatically a hedge against the difference between spot and perpetual prices.

These are price-profit calculations, not exchange margin outputs. The zero in the synchronized scenarios does not mean the platform should require zero collateral. Execution, settlement currencies, funding and the possibility of the legs moving differently remain relevant. The exercise intentionally avoids inventing an “80% margin saving” that no account calculation has demonstrated.

Gross exposure, net direction and recognized offset are different numbers

Gross exposure adds the size of both legs. Net directional exposure subtracts their sensitivity to a chosen price move. A recognized offset is what the venue’s risk rules allow after considering those positions. A trader can be approximately neutral to BTC’s direction yet still have substantial gross exposure and a nonzero maintenance requirement.

A long BTC/short ETH trade is not equivalent to the same-asset pair in Portfolio A. If BTC falls 20% while ETH falls 10%, two equal starting $50,000 legs lose $10,000 on BTC and gain only $5,000 on ETH. The remaining $5,000 loss comes from their relative movement. Historical correlation cannot turn that pair into a guaranteed offset.

To evaluate your own portfolio, write down one adverse event that affects both legs and one that affects them differently. The second event often reveals why a seemingly balanced trade still consumes margin. You do not need a complex model to identify that question, but the platform’s actual margin preview is needed to quantify the account requirement.

Which positions can receive portfolio offsets on Bybit?

Bybit groups contracts with the same underlying into a risk unit. Its portfolio calculation tests price and volatility changes and adds reserves for risks the main scenario does not fully capture. Spot must be included through the Spot Hedging feature to enter the relevant stress calculation; simply owning the coin does not establish that this feature is active.

Its documentation limits eligible spot hedging to pairs supported in margin trading. Assets allocated to the hedge cannot be transferred out while in use. Borrowed-asset margin remains a separate requirement. These constraints explain why switching modes can change both the displayed requirement and what you can move out of the account.

For the BTC spot/perpetual pair above, first establish that both legs belong to the recognized account and that the spot asset participates in the hedge. A BTC holding in a different wallet cannot be assumed to offset the exchange’s derivative merely because your own spreadsheet includes it. Account boundaries are part of the strategy’s financing.

An option adds another dimension: its response to a price move changes with price, time and expected volatility. A short option that appears balanced against a perpetual today may become more exposed under a larger move. That is why a current net-direction number cannot replace the scenario assessment. You can use the account’s preview without reproducing a full options-pricing model yourself.

Treat a margin reduction as capacity released under the current portfolio, not as a permanent entitlement attached to a particular contract. Removing one leg can remove the offset. Adding an order can introduce a possible portfolio different from the one you currently hold. The remaining position matters as much as the action you are about to take.

What the Bybit calculation does—and what this guide does not reproduce

Bybit’s published model combines maximum scenario loss with contingency components; initial margin uses an additional factor. Its treatment of open orders considers portfolios with different groups of orders filled. This guide demonstrates price relationships, not the full engine.

The calculation page and the general borrowing page describe auto-repayment thresholds differently. We do not collapse those into one universal PM trigger. The portfolio account’s current risk settings and applicable rules are required for execution; the article does not promise a response window.

Is Binance or Hyperliquid portfolio margin the same product?

Binance: distinguish Portfolio Margin from Portfolio Margin Pro

Binance’s standard Portfolio Margin combines supported Cross Margin, USDⓈ-M and COIN-M resources and uses its unified maintenance measure. Its introduction excludes the Isolated Margin Wallet and describes a margin-check service for intended positions. Those boundaries are more useful than assuming every Binance balance belongs to one unrestricted pool.

Portfolio Margin Pro is a separately documented program. Its overview describes consolidated support across those product wallets and a maintenance-based approach without the same initial-margin check. Do not transfer Pro’s order behavior, enrollment conditions or withdrawal formula into an explanation of ordinary Portfolio Margin. The extra word identifies a materially different arrangement.

Hyperliquid: a shared balance per asset versus borrowing across eligible assets

Hyperliquid’s unified mode shares a balance for each collateral asset across the applicable spot and perpetual activity. Its portfolio mode combines eligible assets more broadly. The account-mode documentation also says unified and portfolio balances appear in the spot clearinghouse state for API users. Reading only an individual perpetual venue state can therefore misrepresent the account.

Hyperliquid’s portfolio model includes automatic borrowing against eligible collateral when the relevant balance is insufficient. Its published rules charge borrowing interest and impose supply and borrowing caps. After borrowing capacity is exhausted, additional margin must be supplied in the settlement asset. This is a different operational question from calculating a Bybit scenario offset.

The label alone is not enough to import one platform’s simulator or liquidation percentage into another. For Hyperliquid, available credit and the supported collateral set can determine whether the intended trade works. For Bybit, recognition of the positions within the risk model is central. For Binance, the particular PM program and included wallets matter.

A more integrated account can make trading smoother while connecting risks you previously kept apart. If one reserve supports several strategies, its use by one strategy changes what remains for the others. That can be an intentional benefit, but it should be a deliberate allocation decision rather than a surprise discovered after switching.

Can I switch to portfolio margin with open positions?

Bybit’s published switching criteria permit a move to PM when the post-switch initial margin rate is at most 100% and there are no hedge-mode positions or orders. PM uses one-way position mode. Returning to isolated has additional conditions, including no borrowing or options exposure and enough assets for the resulting position allocations.

Here, “hedge mode” means the interface feature for holding separate long and short sides of the same contract. It is not the same as a hedged investment strategy using spot and a perpetual. A trader can run an economic hedge in one-way mode; confusing those terms can make a valid strategy sound prohibited.

Binance’s standard PM activation page requires relevant accounts to be clear of positions, orders and negative balances, with Cross Margin loans repaid. It also lists incompatible modes that must be disabled. That is an operationally different move from Bybit’s conditional change with eligible positions still open.

Closing a position solely to migrate creates real costs and possible market exposure between closing and reopening. Estimate those costs before treating a lower future margin requirement as an immediate gain. If you would close two legs separately, consider what remains exposed between those executions; the account upgrade itself does not bridge that interval.

Portfolio Margin Pro enrollment is not a retail toggle

Binance’s Pro application page lists either futures volume equivalent to VIP 7–9 or a combined qualifying wallet balance exceeding 10 million USDT. Enrollment is arranged through the relevant team. Enabling or disabling a Pro subaccount requires positive wallet balances, repayment and no positions or open orders. Those are published program criteria, not approval of any particular reader.

For standard PM, the current activation flow checks eligibility and returns an error when a condition is unmet. A historical announcement expanding access to non-VIP users is not sufficient proof that a specific regional account can activate it today. Use the current product and entity offered to the account; do not apply Pro’s threshold to the standard mode.

Migration detail for automated traders

Binance’s activation documentation advises recreating the API key after enabling or disabling standard Portfolio Margin. It also distinguishes bot balances from the PM margin calculation. Review the relevant credentials and account endpoints before restarting automation.

This research did not change a live account mode or create API credentials. A migration plan should preserve the record of existing orders and verify the resulting account state before a strategy resumes.

Why can a profitable unified account still owe interest?

Suppose a simplified account owns $12,000 of BTC and owes 2,000 USDT after a derivatives loss. At a one-dollar USDT valuation, net equity before other adjustments is $10,000. Positive overall equity does not erase the USDT obligation. The exchange may accept BTC as support while keeping the currency liability outstanding.

That distinction explains why “my other trade is in profit” is not a complete answer to a borrowing charge. Profit can improve the account’s net position without supplying the currency needed to settle a particular liability. Whether it does settle that liability depends on the product’s realization, conversion and repayment rules.

Bybit’s UTA borrowing update separates spot liabilities from derivatives liabilities. In the updated design, a transfer into UTA can automatically repay derivatives liabilities, while spot liabilities require manual repayment. A zero or positive wallet balance alone may therefore be insufficient evidence that a spot loan is repaid. Check the liability record and repayment result.

Binance’s Pro FAQ likewise states that Cross Margin borrowing fees continue even when equity in the futures wallets offsets the borrowing economically. It also permits certain negative wallet balances while the account satisfies its risk conditions. Shared collateral and a paid-off debt are different states.

Evaluate the whole strategy’s carrying cost. A funding receipt on a short perpetual is one cash flow; interest on the currency financing it is another. If an illustrative day produces $18 of funding but $7 of borrowing interest, $11 remains before trading fees and other effects. The funding figure alone overstates what the strategy earned.

Changing margin mode can alter how much capital you need to commit without altering the market’s funding rate. Compare the net result on the capital actually committed, alongside the obligations created. A higher apparent return on equity achieved by adding borrowing is not a free increase in the strategy’s underlying profit.

Can I withdraw the capital released by portfolio margin?

Do not equate the reduction in required margin with an immediately withdrawable amount. The withdrawal changes the portfolio too: it removes supporting equity and may remove an asset that the risk engine uses in a hedge. Evaluate the account after the proposed transfer, not just its current spare-capacity display.

Binance Pro’s published account-wide withdrawal ceiling uses equity minus 1.2 times maintenance margin, floored at zero. There are also coin-specific restrictions. At illustrative equity of $25,000 and maintenance of $10,000, that account-wide calculation gives $13,000. It does not authorize withdrawing $13,000 of an asset the wallet does not have or that is restricted by another rule.

After a withdrawal, the remaining composition can matter more than its headline value. Selling or transferring the spot half of a spot/perpetual hedge leaves the short exposed. Reducing the short first changes the account in a different way. An orderly exit plans both legs and the settlement currency instead of treating each line as unrelated.

Closing a profitable leg and withdrawing its proceeds removes equity support from the account. Even without a withdrawal, closing one leg can remove a recognized offset. A trade labeled “close” reduces that position’s quantity, but it can increase the risk of the portfolio that remains. That is why the post-action margin preview is especially useful when dismantling a hedge.

An account screenshot taken before a withdrawal cannot demonstrate that the same positions are supportable afterward. Record the proposed destination, asset, quantity and resulting requirement together. This makes the decision concrete and prevents a seemingly small housekeeping transfer from becoming an unplanned change in the strategy.

A directional perp with no recognized offset may gain little from portfolio margin. A persistent eligible hedge can free capital, but only while its components remain recognized. Match the mode to the strategy you expect to open and unwind.

Portfolio account decisions

Does choosing portfolio margin change the size of my existing futures trade?

The mode changes account treatment, not the quantity you have traded. A platform may require you to close positions before switching, but that is a migration condition. If the same position survives a permitted mode change, a given price move still produces the contract’s corresponding P&L.

Can portfolio margin require more collateral than cross margin?

It can, depending on the platform and portfolio. A concentrated position, a weakly matched hedge or additional risk reserves may eliminate the expected saving. Compare the requirement for your actual holdings; a benefit shown for someone else’s options or spot hedge is not a universal discount.

Is one-way mode incompatible with a spot-and-perpetual hedge?

No. One-way mode prevents separate long and short sides of the same contract from being maintained as hedge-mode positions. Owning spot and holding a net short perpetual is a different construction. Product eligibility and the risk model still determine whether it receives an offset.

Does holding both USDT and USDC make an account automatically balanced?

No. Two collateral currencies do not offset a directional futures position. They can also introduce a currency-conversion difference. Assess the derivative exposure and the account’s treatment of each reserve separately rather than counting the number of assets held.

Will a hedge on another exchange reduce my margin requirement here?

Do not assume so. Your total economic exposure can be hedged across venues while each venue requires its own collateral. The receiving risk engine must explicitly recognize the external arrangement; merely having an opposite trade elsewhere does not give it control of that trade or its profits.

Does unused capacity mean I should increase leverage?

No. It gives you a choice between keeping more headroom, reallocating eligible funds or increasing exposure. Increasing the trade consumes the benefit and changes the loss profile. Compare the original strategy first, before using a lower requirement to justify a larger position.

Is portfolio margin the same as lower trading fees?

No. Margin treatment, trading fees, funding and borrowing interest are separate parts of the cost. A more efficient account may still have the same maker/taker schedule, and extra borrowing can add an expense even when required margin falls.
