Bybit or Phemex: which fits the way you place a trade?

Read the verdictBybit is our first choice for an eligible Gabon resident who wants straightforward control over an immediate futures order. Phemex is a useful alternative when waiting for a chosen price is part of the plan. The distinction matters more than putting the exchange with the largest leverage number at the top.
Gabon is not named in the reviewed Bybit restricted-country notice or Phemex restricted-territory list. That supports this shortlist, subject to the customer’s actual account and product checks. It does not mean either company is a locally licensed Gabonese exchange or that every XAF payment method will work.
The country catalogue below also covers the other available and limited services. This shortlist is aimed at readers choosing between a prompt entry and a patient limit order; it does not rank a spot-only payment service as if it were a futures account.
Bybit: put a boundary around the entry price
Imagine seeing Bitcoin at a price you are happy to pay, tapping Buy, then receiving a worse average fill because the available sellers changed. That difference is slippage. It is separate from the exchange’s trading fee, so a low-fee account can still produce an expensive entry.
Bybit provides a slippage-tolerance setting for market orders and market closes. Its help page says the feature can constrain the accepted price range, with unfilled quantity outside that range cancelled. For BTC and ETH, the documented setting uses an amount rather than a percentage. Conditional and trailing-stop orders do not inherit this protection.
What the setting can actually save you from
In the illustration, the best ask is 100,000 USDT and the allowed difference is 50 USDT. The highest accepted buy price is therefore 100,050. An offer at 100,060 is beyond that boundary. This is a limit on the entry price, not a promise that the desired position will be filled.
Suppose you request 0.03 BTC but only 0.02 BTC can be matched inside the range. You must then manage the 0.02 BTC position that exists. Repeatedly tapping Buy to make the original number appear could create a second order at a different price.
For someone trading from a phone in Libreville, this gives a practical way to express “I want the trade promptly, but not at any price.” It is not evidence of faster Gabon internet or superior local connectivity. We have not measured either exchange’s latency from a Gabonese connection.
Phemex: cheaper patient orders, with a trade-off
Phemex makes more sense when your plan allows the market to come to your price. Its 2026 futures guide lists a 0.01% maker fee and 0.06% taker fee. Bybit’s published non-VIP rates for standard futures are 0.02% and 0.055%. The lower number belongs to Phemex for maker fills, but to Bybit for taker fills.
A maker order adds liquidity and waits to be matched. Merely calling an order “limit” does not guarantee that result: a limit order priced to match immediately can still take liquidity. The relevant comparison is how the order actually fills, not the button’s label.
Waiting, partial filling or all-or-nothing
Phemex documents three timing choices. Good Till Cancel keeps an order active until cancellation. Immediate Or Cancel removes anything that cannot fill immediately. Fill or Kill cancels the whole order if the full requested quantity cannot be filled immediately.
For an illustrative 0.03 BTC request with only 0.02 BTC available at the accepted price, Immediate Or Cancel can leave 0.02 BTC filled and cancel 0.01. Fill or Kill instead leaves no position if the entire size cannot be completed. Good Till Cancel can leave a remainder waiting, which you must remember when leaving the app.
Choose Phemex for a patient, deliberately priced entry when the account’s actual maker rate supports the saving. Keep Bybit first when its market-order price control fits your routine better. We are not claiming Phemex has no other controls or that Bybit lacks limit orders; these are the documented features and cost differences that decide this particular shortlist.
What would opening and closing the same trade cost?
Use the same contract value on both sides before comparing fees. The examples below assume 2,000 USDT at entry and 2,000 at exit, the stated basic rates, no promotions and no extra discounts. They exclude funding, slippage, currency conversion and withdrawals.
| How the fills happen | Bybit | Phemex |
|---|---|---|
| Both maker | 0.80 USDT | 0.40 USDT |
| Maker entry, taker exit | 1.50 USDT | 1.40 USDT |
| Both taker | 2.20 USDT | 2.40 USDT |
The practical winner changes with the order pattern. Phemex saves 0.40 USDT when both orders are maker fills, but only 0.10 when the exit is a taker fill. Bybit saves 0.20 if both are taker fills. None of those results supports claiming that one exchange is always cheaper.
Now compare that saving with an entry that slips by 0.15% on 2,000 USDT: the extra price cost is 3 USDT. This hypothetical slippage is larger than every fee difference in the table. That is why the first recommendation focuses on an execution control rather than awarding the whole comparison to the lowest advertised fee.
Do not import a VIP or special-market rate
Bybit says the verified account’s fee page governs the actual rate and identifies separate pricing for special trading zones. Phemex also has tier and promotion conditions. A screenshot of somebody else’s discounted account is not your cost schedule. Read the rate attached to your own intended contract.
The table also assumes equal opening and closing values. In a real position, the closing price changes that second value. A funding debit while the position is open is an additional cash flow, not already included because the page mentions a round trip.
Can Airtel Money or a UBA account fund the exchange?
UBA Gabon’s Push and Pull agreement establishes a link between a customer’s own Airtel Money wallet and their own UBA account. It does not identify Bybit or Phemex as a direct receiving account. Moving XAF into the bank is therefore not the same as funding a futures balance.
This distinction is easy to miss when someone advertises “Airtel supported.” They may mean that a private seller accepts a wallet payment. That is a different arrangement from an exchange offering an authorised deposit into an account in your name. The familiar wallet brand cannot guarantee the seller’s performance or the legality of the next step.
What to establish before committing a local balance
- Which company is actually receiving the payment, rather than only the trading app’s brand.
- Whether the bank permits the stated purpose and has the required documents.
- Which currency the recipient accepts and what amount should arrive after charges.
- How the proceeds would be returned to your own account if the investment is closed.
Phemex publishes a separate restriction list for the Legend Trading fiat service, and Gabon is not named in the version reviewed. That is a useful service-specific check; it is not proof of a live Gabon-to-Phemex transfer, direct XAF support or bank approval. The current account and beneficiary instructions still need to exist.
If all your money is currently in a local wallet and the proposed next step is an informal bridge through another person’s exchange account, neither of our two shortlisted platforms fixes that problem. Keep the exchange comparison separate from a funding method that has not been established.
What do CEMAC rules mean for a Gabon resident?
Gabon belongs to CEMAC, so the regional banking and foreign-exchange framework matters. COBAC’s May 2022 statement addresses crypto activities involving supervised institutions, including holding, conversion and settlement. It is a reason not to assume a bank can process a payment simply because an offshore exchange accepts an application.
BEAC’s investment-transfer instruction separately sets out requirements for outward investment. The bank has to identify the relevant category and any declaration or authorisation for the actual operation. This page does not apply a general portfolio-investment threshold as a ready-made exemption for a crypto contract.
The resulting distinction is precise: the provider’s list supports considering the account; local rules determine what the resident and bank may do. We have kept those facts separate instead of changing 11 available platform records to zero based solely on the difficulty of local funding.
What would count as stronger local evidence?
A named Gabon or regional authorisation covering the service would be stronger than an overseas registration number. A bank’s response about the actual beneficiary and purpose would be stronger than a generic statement that international transfers are possible. These documents answer different questions, and neither can be replaced by the other.
What if the wallet is debited but the bank is not credited?
Keep the local transfer reference and compare both sides of the transaction. The wallet debit proves that one stage was recorded; it does not prove that the bank balance was credited or that any later overseas payment happened. A screenshot saying “successful” needs to be matched to the receiving account.
Article 12 of UBA’s published Airtel Money contract calls for a written complaint without delay, with acknowledgement, and states a 30-calendar-day contractual limit for disputing an operation. Treat that as a reason to act promptly. It is not a universal summary of every legal remedy available to a consumer.
A useful complaint identifies the transaction date, reference, amount, sending wallet and expected receiving account. Include the debit record and the receiving statement covering that period. Ask for a case reference and the transaction’s actual status. You should not need to disclose a wallet PIN, password or one-time login code to describe a missing credit.
Meanwhile, a futures position runs on the collateral already present at the exchange. The bank complaint does not pause its losses or make the delayed XAF balance count as margin. The plan should never depend on recovering a disputed transfer in time to support an open leveraged position.
How do you know the trade is finished and the money is usable?
After an exit order, check the remaining position quantity. With a price boundary or a partial fill, “order completed” can describe what happened to the order without meaning the whole original position has disappeared. Cancel any unwanted remainder and check that there is no unexpected open order that could create exposure later.
Then distinguish the realised trading result from the amount available to withdraw. A balance still supporting another position or an amount held for an unresolved account check is not ready local spending money. The relevant figure is the account’s permitted withdrawal amount for the chosen asset and network.
Estimate the amount that would reach Gabon
For a permitted withdrawal arrangement, calculate the complete path back to your own account rather than multiplying the trading profit by a convenient online rate. An illustrative quote of 600 XAF per net delivered dollar-equivalent turns 250 into 150,000 XAF. If a fixed 10-dollar-equivalent charge is taken before conversion, 240 reaches that calculation and the result is 144,000 XAF. These are invented inputs to show the accounting, not a provider’s offer.
A quote should say whether the charge is already included in the delivered amount. Otherwise it is easy to subtract it twice or overlook it completely. Keep the exchange withdrawal record, the intermediate receipt where applicable and the final bank credit so that a missing amount can be located.
UBA’s FAQ also says its Courbevoie presence in France is a representative office and does not provide cash deposits or withdrawals there. A trip to France is therefore not a reason to treat that office as a cash bridge to an overseas futures account.
