Which exchange fits a Cameroon trader?
| What you need | First comparison | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| USDT already held; manage perpetual positions | Bybit and its enabled USDT contracts | Keeps collateral and realised trading P&L in the settlement unit you brought. |
| A different accepted collateral balance | Kraken Multi-M | Compare the collateral treatment rather than converting only to follow a ranking. |
| Other crypto exchanges | OKX, Crypto.com, Gate, KuCoin, Phemex and BingX | All remain in the 12 Available records; compare the specific market and withdrawal network. |
Ejara remains relevant for local crypto and savings questions, but those functions do not make it a perpetual venue. For a trading account, compare the contract you want; for money moving through a Cameroonian bank, use the payment conditions below.
Why start with Bybit for an existing USDT balance?
A USDT-settled contract lets the trader follow margin and realised trading gains in the same unit as the initial balance. For someone in Cameroon who already owns USDT, that avoids adding a collateral conversion solely to enter the trade. It does not fix the FCFA exchange rate or guarantee the account’s product permission.
Kraken is worth comparing when its accepted collateral suits what you already own. Check the collateral reduction and the dollar value credited to margin, then compare the position at the same exposure. There is little benefit in converting assets solely to follow a ranking.
Bybit: one BTC trade, two ways to manage the position
For an existing USDT balance, Bybit’s USDT perpetuals keep realised trading profit and loss in USDT. In isolated mode, the position uses its assigned margin. In cross mode, other eligible account collateral can support the account. The important choice is how much of your trading balance you intend to put behind that particular idea.
Suppose you have 300 USDT and want a 1,000 USDT BTC position. Allocating 100 USDT to an isolated position is different from leaving the full eligible balance behind cross-margin positions. The remaining 200 USDT is not automatically the same reserve under both settings. Review automatic margin additions as well as the word “isolated”.
Can you take some profit and keep the rest open?
Yes. Bybit documents take-profit and stop-loss orders for an entire position or parts of it. A partial exit reduces the exposure while leaving the remaining quantity open. That fits a trader who wants to realise some USDT without abandoning the whole position, provided the remaining exit instructions match what is still held.
A limit profit order may not fill merely because a trigger was reached. Read the filled quantity and open orders after an alert. If you manually close part of the position as well, check that the remaining instructions still describe the trade you intend. The useful information is the quantity left, not the colour of the profit label.
For a Douala trader whose local funds are costly to move, these controls help manage the crypto balance already present. They cannot guarantee an FCFA payout or permission for a local bank to process a crypto-related transfer.
Will the exchange use the money you planned to withdraw?
Bybit’s Auto-Margin Replenishment can move available funds into an isolated position when it needs more support. That can delay liquidation, but it also changes how much of the balance is committed to the trade. If you intended to set aside tokens for an FCFA payout, an automatic top-up can consume part of that intended reserve.
The setting is not a free insurance feature. More money behind an open loss means more capital remains exposed. Decide whether you want that behaviour before the market moves, rather than discovering it when the withdrawal amount is lower than expected.
A loss budget you can read in FCFA
At an assumed XAF 600 per USDT, assigning 100 USDT means 60,000 FCFA equivalent behind a position. An additional 50 USDT top-up adds another 30,000 FCFA equivalent. The price loss is still determined by the position quantity; adding funds does not erase it or improve the entry price.
These conversion amounts are illustrative, not a payout quote. They make the trade-off visible to a reader who spends in FCFA: the amount first allocated is not necessarily the final amount committed if automatic additions are allowed.
When Kraken is the better comparison
If your balance is BTC or another supported asset rather than USDT, compare Kraken’s Multi-M collateral treatment. The platform counts collateral at its dollar value, with the published reductions where applicable. A falling coin can weaken the backing balance at the same time a leveraged long loses money. That is a different setup from a USDT-funded isolated trade, not an automatic improvement.
Choose between the two according to the asset you hold and the reserve you need. Keeping more crypto as collateral can avoid a conversion, but it can also connect the futures position to price movements in those other holdings.
What do Cameroon’s crypto restrictions actually cover?
The May 2022 COBAC communiqué addresses supervised financial institutions. It covers crypto holdings, conversions, and settlement or currency cover for transactions involving or related to cryptocurrencies. It is not accurate to turn that document into a statement that every individual Bitcoin holder has committed a criminal offence.
For this guide, the consequence is narrower and practical: a bank’s ability to send an ordinary international transfer does not prove that it can process the proposed crypto-related investment. A cash-settled future avoids taking delivery of Bitcoin, but the underlying exposure is still Bitcoin. That distinction needs to be presented honestly to the bank, not used to rename the payment as unrelated shopping.
Does a small amount avoid the investment rules?
BEAC Instruction 003/2020 says covered outward portfolio investments below FCFA 20 million per economic agent per year require advance declaration at least 30 days before the operation. It requires prior authorisation for amounts above FCFA 20 million. Those are annual investment rules, not a new allowance that starts over with each transfer.
The instruction defines its portfolio-investment category around participations and debt securities. It should not be assumed to classify every futures-margin transfer automatically. For the exact threshold or a derivative account, ask the bank which category and supporting requirements apply. The rule is not permission to bypass the separate crypto-related restriction.
A 2026 BEAC–IMF workshop in Yaoundé, reported by GABAC, addressed digital currency and crypto regulation. That shows policy work is continuing; a seminar announcement is not an operator licence or a repeal of an existing restriction. We use the published rules rather than treating a headline about future regulation as present access.
What should you settle with the bank before a deposit?
If a bank transfer is being considered, provide the exchange’s legal beneficiary, account reference and true payment purpose. The bank restrictions described above remain controlling. A tariff quote or a receiving account supplied by the exchange is not permission to process a prohibited transaction.
Ask whether that specific payment can be processed and what records and charges apply. Do not use a salary-transfer category to describe funding a crypto account. The bank needs the real transaction to assess, not a substitute description chosen to fit a cheaper tariff.
Do not borrow a tariff from the wrong line
Société Générale Cameroun’s January 2026 personal tariff labels one outward transfer category outside the BEAC area as employment income. That line is not a general investment-transfer quote. Using its rate to calculate the cost of funding a futures account would give a precise-looking but unsupported number.
A useful quote separates the amount sent, bank commission, correspondent charges and currency conversion. If the recipient must receive a particular amount, establish who pays intermediary deductions. A short credit at the exchange can leave less margin than expected even though the bank debited the full amount you approved.
If the bank cannot process the transaction, do not replace it with a payment to an unknown person who promises to credit the exchange for you. That changes the recipient, the source-of-funds trail and potentially the permitted purpose. A cheaper payment path is not useful when it fails to produce an account balance you can explain and withdraw.
Does Ejara give you the same thing as a futures exchange?
No. Ejara Crypto is relevant when identifying the coins you already hold and the wallet you would transfer from. It is not evidence of a Bitcoin perpetual position. A spot coin balance can be transferred where supported; a futures position is a contract held at its trading venue.
The app’s release notes from December 2025 separate the crypto and savings services. That matters if you open an old installation and cannot find the balance expected from a previous screenshot. Identify the actual app and asset before following a deposit tutorial. The separate savings product does not establish a withdrawable crypto balance in the crypto app.
Match the asset, not just the brand
If you intend to move coins to Bybit or Kraken, the destination must accept that asset on the same network. Having Bitcoin in one service does not mean sending it to a USDT address funds a USDT contract. Selling or converting first is a separate transaction with its own price and charge.
A futures profit also does not automatically appear back in Ejara or Orange Money. The exchange settles it under the contract’s rules, and any external transfer needs a supported destination. Use the crypto app for the function it actually documents; use the futures venue for the leveraged trade. A familiar local brand does not join the two accounts together.
How much FCFA would a withdrawal leave you?
The SG Cameroun tariff lists repatriation commission as free, then gives a separate line for off-account operations or non-clients: 0.30% including tax, with a FCFA 6,000 minimum. These are different categories. The 6,000 minimum should not be applied indiscriminately to every customer receiving overseas proceeds.
| Incoming equivalent | 0.30% calculation | Minimum applied | Net after this charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| FCFA 200,000 | FCFA 600 | FCFA 6,000 | FCFA 194,000 |
| FCFA 500,000 | FCFA 1,500 | FCFA 6,000 | FCFA 494,000 |
| FCFA 3,000,000 | FCFA 9,000 | FCFA 9,000 | FCFA 2,991,000 |
This is why the receiving arrangement can matter more than a tiny difference in exchange commission. Confirm whether proceeds will be credited to your own account, handled outside an account, or rejected for missing information. “Free repatriation commission” still does not tell you the conversion rate or all costs charged elsewhere in the transfer chain.
Close the trade, then check what is available
A displayed profit can be tied up in an open position or offset by losses elsewhere. Check the exchange’s actual balance available for withdrawal after closing or reducing exposure. Requesting the whole visible balance can remove the buffer from positions that remain open; it is not the same thing as withdrawing unused cash.
If the return is delayed, keep the exchange’s withdrawal confirmation and the bank’s transaction reference. These locate a bank payment. A token transaction hash, by contrast, locates a blockchain transfer and does not prove a bank has received FCFA. Identify which stage is incomplete before paying another intermediary to “release” the money.
Measure the result in the currency you actually spend
Cameroon uses XAF, the Central African CFA franc. BEAC gives the euro parity as EUR 1 = FCFA 655.957. XOF is the West African CFA franc used in countries such as Benin; a checkout listing XOF is not automatically a Cameroon payment method. A shared “CFA” label can conceal a different receiving network.
For performance, use the actual FCFA debits and credits from your records. Suppose funding and all outward charges cost FCFA 620,000, and the final amount returned is FCFA 650,000. Your realised cash difference is FCFA 30,000 before any applicable tax, about 4.84% of the starting outlay. It is not a FCFA 650,000 profit and may differ from the percentage shown on a USD contract.
Keep any funds left at the exchange separate from money already returned. Otherwise a partial withdrawal can make a winning account look like a loss, or make withdrawn capital look like new income. A small record of contributions, trading statements, charges and withdrawals is enough to reconcile the result without a complicated spreadsheet.
