Best Crypto Exchange For Futures in Malaysia

Short Answer

Kraken is our candidate for Bitcoin and Ethereum futures, subject to eligibility and lawful use. It operates offshore; it is not an SC-registered Malaysian exchange.

Luno and Hata Malaysia handle supported spot coins and ringgit. Bybit, OKX and MEXC are excluded from this shortlist because of local enforcement or platform restrictions.

The useful shortlist

Where can a Malaysian trader actually find crypto futures?

Kraken

The difficult part of this search is that the best-known Malaysian crypto apps and the global futures platforms solve different problems. Luno and Hata Malaysia give you identifiable local businesses for buying and selling supported coins in ringgit. That does not make a normal coin purchase a leveraged position. If you want to short Bitcoin or trade a perpetual, look for that precise product rather than a general exchange rating.

Kraken is the international candidate we would investigate first for an eligible Malaysian resident interested in BTC or ETH perpetuals. Its published location policy does not name Malaysia as a blanket derivatives exclusion, and it documents the contracts, collateral and fees. However, Kraken is not on the SC’s registered Malaysian DAX list. An eligible offshore account therefore must not be presented as an SC-authorised local futures service.

NeedOption to examineWhat the recommendation means
Trade BTC or ETH perpetualsKraken, subject to lawful use and verified-account approvalInternational derivatives candidate; not a Malaysian-registered DAX

Manage supported coins and ringgit withdrawalsHata MalaysiaLocal account; distinguish it from Hata Global
Use Bybit, OKX or MEXC from a Malaysian addressDo not rely on an old global rankingNamed enforcement or operator restrictions change the answer

A local ringgit account is easier to evaluate through the SC register; a global futures account needs a separate product-access decision. If local registration is a firm requirement, choose from the SC register and accept the products those accounts actually provide. We have not verified an SC-registered retail DAX offering the same leveraged BTC perpetual described here.

If futures are essential, resolve account eligibility and lawful use before sending money to the offshore platform. A website that loads, an app-store listing and a successful coin deposit are all weaker evidence than access to the intended product in a verified account.

02
Spot versus futures

Can Luno or Hata give you the leverage you want?

The locally regulated spot exchange supplies coins, while the leveraged product requires its own eligibility assessment. For an MYR-funded trader, the useful comparison is whether the local purchase supplies an asset that the intended futures account accepts.

That difference answers several common searches at once. Buying BTC/MYR is not buying “Bitcoin futures in ringgit”. A staking feature is not leverage. A product that pays rewards for holding coins is not a way to open a short position. Do not choose an app because its homepage uses the word “trade” without checking which of these activities the account supports.

Choose the product before comparing the fee

If your goal is simply to hold Bitcoin with MYR entry and exit, a local spot exchange can be the better fit. Paying for offshore transfers just to imitate an unleveraged purchase adds work. But if your goal is a short-term BTC short or a leveraged long, compare actual derivative contracts rather than presenting a local buy button as an equivalent alternative.

For the Kraken candidate, the relevant product is international crypto derivatives on Kraken Pro. It is not the separate US futures service, and it is not an ordinary instant crypto purchase. The distinction is useful because search results can mix all three products under a single Kraken review.

The ringgit budget and the crypto position are two separate decisions: first choose the product, then work out the cost of entering and leaving it.

A demo is useful for the interface, not proof of access

A practice environment can help you recognise the order size, collateral balance and close-position control. It does not prove that a live Malaysian account can trade the same market. If live access is missing after verification, adding a larger deposit is not a solution.

If you already own BTC and only want to sell part of it, you may not need a derivative at all. If you want to profit from a price fall without holding BTC first, the ability to open a genuine short becomes a deciding feature. Start with that intended trade rather than the app with the longest list of services.

03
Leverage and contracts

How much leverage can you get on Kraken’s BTC and ETH perps?

Some older Kraken help material still describes a 50× ceiling. A later announcement dated 15 May 2026 raised the published maximum for two international perpetual contracts to 100× in eligible regions: BTC/USD and ETH/USD. The announcement identifies the relevant contracts as PF_XBTUSD and PF_ETHUSD. It does not raise every altcoin market to 100×.

The announced top tier applies up to USD 1 million of BTC exposure and USD 500,000 of ETH exposure, with lower leverage applying as size increases. The current margin schedule also lists a 100× first tier for SOL up to USD 200,000; that later schedule should be consulted rather than treating the two-contract announcement as a complete list of today’s markets. Your permitted account, current contract schedule and order ticket still control what you can actually open. A Malaysian reader should not interpret this as a guaranteed 100× entitlement or a locally approved leverage limit.

BTC/USD and ETH/USD contract cards showing up to 100 times leverage for eligible accounts and position tiers in the May 2026 update.
The May 2026 increase concerns two named perpetuals. It is not a platform-wide leverage setting for every coin or every resident.

Higher leverage does not make the market move more

With USD 200 supporting USD 2,000 of exposure, the position is effectively 10× leveraged. A 1% adverse move means roughly USD 20 of price loss, before costs. With the same USD 200 supporting USD 20,000, the same market move would consume roughly USD 200 before fees and maintenance requirements; liquidation can occur before that full move is reached.

The point is not to calculate a guaranteed liquidation price from a headline multiple. It is to see that the same Bitcoin move can have very different consequences for the margin you committed. The exchange’s displayed liquidation estimate includes conditions this simple illustration leaves out.

Can you short Bitcoin without buying it first?

A supported perpetual lets you open a short position on the price rather than first owning the coin. If the price rises against the short, the position loses value and can be liquidated. A spot-only account that lets you sell previously owned BTC is not the same thing as opening that short.

For a beginner choosing between BTC and a small altcoin perpetual, inspect the available order book and the cost to close the intended amount. A market with a high leverage headline but a poor exit price is not necessarily the more useful trading product. This comparison should happen on the live market, not be replaced with a blanket claim that more listed coins always means a better exchange.

04
Fees without the jargon

What does a Malaysian futures trade really cost?

Kraken’s reviewed entry-level international derivatives schedule lists 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker commission. These are percentages of the traded position value, not just the cash you put up as margin. Funding, conversion, withdrawal charges and any liquidation costs are separate. The actual account rate may differ with volume and applicable terms.

A small example that does not hide the exit

For a hypothetical USD 3,000 position opened and closed at the same value with taker orders, 0.05% means USD 1.50 on entry and USD 1.50 on exit: USD 3 in trading commission. If the closing value changes, the second fee changes too. A commission-only calculation is not a prediction of the final profit.

Now add the spread: the gap between the price at which you can buy and the price at which you can sell immediately. A wider gap can cost more than a small difference in exchange fees. You can inspect both sides of the order book before placing the order; no membership upgrade is needed to understand what price is currently being offered.

What is a funding payment?

A perpetual has no scheduled expiry like a dated contract. Funding payments help keep its price connected to the underlying market. Depending on the current rate and your position, you may pay or receive money while holding it. The sign can change, so an attractive rate at entry is not a promised yield.

Read the live contract’s funding display in the same currency as the account. A percentage that looks tiny can matter when charged on a position much larger than the margin balance. For a position held for days, review funding separately from the one-off opening commission.

USD, USDT and your original ringgit budget

Kraken’s multi-collateral account values collateral in USD. Its current table includes supported fiat and crypto assets, but MYR is not a direct collateral currency in that table. A Malaysian ringgit display in a portfolio tracker does not change the currency used by the derivative.

If the ringgit value of the dollar changes while you trade, a USD gain and a MYR gain will differ. Record what the original capital cost in ringgit and what the eventual withdrawal actually returns. That is more useful than labelling every positive exchange balance a ringgit profit.

05
Ringgit entry costs

Is buying crypto with MYR expensive before you even start?

For readers starting with ringgit, the local purchase method can outweigh a small difference in futures commission. Luno Malaysia’s published schedule distinguishes its instant buy/sell service from the exchange order book. At the lowest monthly-volume tier reviewed, instant buying or selling costs 2%, while exchange taker orders are 0.60% and maker orders 0.35%.

On a hypothetical RM1,000 purchase, those percentages correspond to RM20, RM6 and RM3.50 respectively, before any other price or transfer effects. The services are not identical: an instant quote offers convenience, while a resting maker order may not fill. The cheaper percentage is only useful if the order accomplishes the purchase you intended.

Bar chart showing illustrative Luno fees on RM1,000: RM20 instant, RM6 exchange taker, RM3.50 exchange maker.
Same purchase budget, different service. These are local spot purchase fees, not Kraken futures fees; maker execution is not guaranteed.

The same tariff lists free FPX and Touch ’n Go deposits from RM100, a RM1 charge below that threshold, and a RM0.10 bank withdrawal fee. Those are service-specific charges, not a promise that a deposit can then be sent to any offshore derivative venue.

Does a registered local purchase make the whole journey approved?

It establishes the nature of that local transaction. It does not transfer the local exchange’s registration to a second business receiving the coins. Before any external transfer, confirm the receiving service is appropriate for your account and that both providers allow the intended activity.

A small experimental trade can become expensive when repeated coin purchases, transfers and conversions surround it. Compare the complete permitted journey once, rather than repeatedly moving small balances between apps to chase marginally lower commission. If the funding costs exceed the amount you are prepared to spend learning, a demo or a local unleveraged purchase may be more useful than forcing a live futures trade.

What about a cheaper MYR peer-to-peer quote?

An attractive price is not proof of a legitimate counterparty or an approved platform. The relevant questions are who receives the bank payment, who delivers the tokens and which business handles a dispute. We do not treat the presence of a Malaysian bank name in an advertisement as the bank’s endorsement of a crypto trade.

The exchange restrictions explained below still matter when a marketplace advertises MYR. P2P availability is not a separate permission to use futures, and it should not be used to work around a platform’s Malaysian restrictions.

06
USDT to MYR

How can a crypto balance become MYR again?

Plan the exit in terms of the coin and network your receiving service currently supports. A futures wallet containing USDT is not automatically a ringgit balance at Luno or Hata Malaysia. Before transferring, check the receiving deposit instructions; similar app names do not guarantee the same token support.

Hata’s September 2026 guide describes a specific path for eligible users with the relevant accounts: exchange USDT for XRP on Hata Global, transfer XRP internally to the user’s Hata MY account, sell XRP for MYR, then withdraw to the designated bank account. This describes those services and accounts; it is not proof that every reader qualifies for both or that Hata Malaysia accepts a direct USDT deposit.

Why the intermediate coin matters

If you convert into XRP during an exit, you hold a price-sensitive asset until it is sold. The amount received in ringgit can change while the transfer and sale are being completed. A cheaper transfer is therefore not necessarily the cheapest overall exit once price movement and the two conversion quotes are considered.

Compare the estimated net MYR across the whole permitted path before beginning. You do not need an elaborate spreadsheet: note the starting asset amount, the intermediate amount expected after charges, and the final sale quote. If any step is unsupported for your account, choose another supported destination rather than sending funds and hoping it will work.

Does profit on the screen mean money available to withdraw?

An open position can show a gain while the same account balance is still supporting that position. Check the withdrawable amount after settlement, fees and any remaining margin requirement. Moving collateral out while another position remains open can change its risk even though the withdrawal itself is technically possible.

For a bank-bound withdrawal, the beneficiary should be your own supported account. Keep the exchange’s transaction record and the bank receipt together. This is helpful when reconciling the trading result and the ringgit received, without turning the article into a catalogue of bank-processing timetables.

07
Local rules

What do Malaysia’s crypto rules change for exchange selection?

The Securities Commission’s DAX register is the starting point for identifying a locally registered digital asset exchange. The table reviewed for this update lists Hata Digital, Luno Malaysia, MX Global, SINEGY DAX and Kinetic DAX. Match the company and service, rather than assuming a familiar brand name covers every related website or product.

The May 2026 revision of the recognised-market framework addresses matters such as asset listings, governance and customer-asset safeguards. It does not justify rewriting every global perpetual exchange as locally approved. Similarly, the January 2026 digital-asset broking practice note is not a general permission to offer any leveraged crypto contract.

Why Bybit no longer belongs in a casual Malaysia shortlist

The SC announced enforcement against Bybit for operating an unregistered DAX in December 2024, including instructions to disable its Malaysian website and apps and stop advertising. An international help page that omits Malaysia from a general excluded-country paragraph does not cancel that Malaysian action. This is why we do not promote a resident Bybit signup here.

OKX’s July 2026 compliance disclosure names Malaysia among restricted locations. MEXC’s reviewed terms also name Malaysia. A tutorial recommending those accounts because an old MYR marketplace used to exist is not enough to support a current recommendation. We do not suggest changing location information or using a VPN to make an ineligible product appear available.

Does an unlisted exchange automatically count as approved?

No. The SC says its investor alert list is not exhaustive. Approval is established through the relevant registration, not through a failed search for the brand on a warning list. Kraken’s position in our shortlist is based on its documented international product and eligibility policy; it is not a claim of Malaysian registration or Malaysian investor protection.

This distinction also explains why a crypto asset can be permitted on a local exchange while an overseas platform selling a leveraged contract on that asset has a different status. The coin, the company and the product must not be treated as one approval.

08
Where you live

Do Sabah, Sarawak or Labuan change which exchange you can use?

Residence and provider location do not establish the same permission
SituationConsequence for the futures choice
Sabah or Sarawak residenceNo separate retail futures permission established in the reviewed SC materials.
A provider with a Labuan licenceCheck its licensed activity; that is not an SC DAX registration.
Hata Malaysia versus Hata GlobalDifferent accounts/entities; a local registration does not follow every global product.

Hata Malaysia and Hata Global are not interchangeable labels

The cash-out example above makes the difference tangible: the provider itself describes moving between two accounts. Read which entity holds the balance and which terms apply to each product. A Malaysian registration associated with one account should not silently follow the user into a different global service.

This does not mean the services cannot work together where the user is eligible. It means the explanation needs to identify what each one does. “Local app for MYR” and “international product” are useful distinctions; “licensed everywhere” is not.

Malaysians living in Singapore, the UK or Canada

Citizenship alone does not decide the derivatives product. Someone genuinely living abroad must use the rules and account information for that residence. Kraken’s international eligibility rules exclude Canada and restrict UK retail derivatives; a Malaysian passport does not undo those limits.

Moving back to Malaysia can also require an account update. Before leaving a position open through a relocation, ask the provider whether the serving entity, available markets or margin conditions will change. This is about continuity of an existing crypto account, not about using a second address to bypass restrictions.

09
DEX questions

Are decentralised perpetuals a better Malaysia option?

A wallet connection may look simpler than an exchange application, but it does not answer the Malaysian regulatory question. A decentralised protocol, the website used to access it and the person trading can be subject to different conditions. The absence of a conventional login does not establish approval to offer the product locally.

For that reason, we do not put a DEX signup ahead of the more clearly documented options in this Malaysia shortlist. Some decentralised products remain in the wider catalogue for research, but inclusion there is not a local licence or a personal eligibility confirmation.

If you are comparing the product itself, include the cost of the chain transfer, the execution model, collateral support and how positions are closed. A self-custody wallet changes control of some assets; it does not remove liquidation risk, smart-contract risk or the possibility that a front end restricts access. None of those differences justifies advertising a DEX as a guaranteed workaround.

The useful conclusion is limited but clear: decentralisation is not the missing Malaysian futures permission. It can be a different technical trading model, but that difference should not replace the account and legal checks needed for the intended activity.

10
Before the first trade

Other questions Malaysian futures traders should settle

Is crypto futures trading halal because Bitcoin is approved?

Do not transfer a ruling on a digital asset to every leveraged product involving that asset. The SC publishes Shariah status for certain assets, while a futures arrangement has its own structure and conditions. A coin’s status or a platform’s private certification is not, by itself, a ruling on the exact perpetual you intend to trade.

A reader for whom Shariah compliance is essential should obtain guidance covering the contract and the way it is used. We have not verified a blanket Shariah approval for the international Kraken perpetual discussed here. This is a product-selection issue, not a reason to label all Malaysian crypto activity the same way.

Are frequent trading profits automatically tax-free?

Do not assume that. LHDN publishes specific guidance on digital-currency transactions, with a December 2025 update listed on its guidance page. The treatment of active trading and the character of the income require attention; a claim that “Malaysia has no crypto tax” is too broad to budget around.

Keep trade exports, fees, deposits, withdrawals and ringgit conversion records from the beginning. A bank cash-out alone may not describe how the gain arose. For the particular treatment of leveraged contracts, use advice covering those contracts and your circumstances rather than applying a spot-investment slogan to a different activity.

What should you check on the phone screen?

Check that the ticket shows the intended contract, position size and margin mode. Distinguish “close” from opening an opposite trade. If you intend to use isolated margin, verify it is selected for that position instead of assuming a general account setting applies everywhere.

Try entering and cancelling a small order or using the practice interface before relying on fast execution. Familiarity with the close-position control is more useful than collecting several apps whose terminology you have never used. Keep security credentials outside the trading screen and use the provider’s supported account-protection features.

What would make us change the shortlist?

A documented Malaysian retail crypto-perpetual offering from a locally authorised business would materially change this comparison. So would a new operator restriction affecting the offshore candidate. An increased bonus or an expanded coin list would be less important than those access changes.

For now, the decision remains product-specific: a registered local spot account for buying and selling coins with MYR; Kraken as an international futures candidate only where the actual account and intended use are permitted. The article is a documented comparison, not a funded test of onboarding, execution or bank withdrawals for a Malaysian resident.

Local FAQ

Malaysian crypto leverage questions

01Does Kraken's Malaysian comparison support 100x on every altcoin?

No. The cited 2026 announcement concerns specified international BTC and ETH contracts in eligible regions, while the margin schedule has its own additional entries and position tiers. A contract's available leverage can decrease as size rises. Malaysia's absence from a country exclusion list also does not establish a Malaysian licence.

02Can I send USDT straight into any Hata Malaysia balance for a MYR withdrawal?

The reviewed Hata guide describes a particular eligible-account route involving USDT conversion to XRP on Hata Global, an internal transfer to Hata MY, a MYR sale and a bank withdrawal. It is not a universal USDT deposit promise. Confirm the supported asset and account relationship before sending tokens from a futures venue.

03Why does this Malaysia guide not recommend a DEX as a shortcut around exchange restrictions?

A wallet-based interface does not establish permission to offer the derivatives product locally, nor does it provide a MYR bank exit. The Malaysian account and regulatory questions therefore remain. The wider catalogue can document such products without presenting them as locally approved replacements for a restricted centralised service.

04Do Luno Malaysia or Hata Malaysia offer the same futures as global exchanges?

Their local spot services allow supported crypto purchases and sales for MYR; those features do not establish a perpetual-futures product. Hata Malaysia and Hata Global must also be distinguished. For leverage, the contract and serving company need to be identified separately rather than applying a Malaysian DAX registration to another service under a related brand.

05Does a Labuan licence allow a platform to offer futures throughout Malaysia?

A Labuan financial-services licence is not the same as SC registration as a Malaysian digital asset exchange. Its permitted activity and customer scope need to cover the actual service. The reviewed sources do not create separate futures entitlements for residents of Sabah or Sarawak either.

06Is it cheaper to buy crypto through Luno Malaysia's instant option or its exchange?

At the reviewed entry tier, instant buying or selling costs 2%, versus exchange rates of 0.60% taker and 0.35% maker. On RM1,000, those percentages are RM20, RM6 and RM3.50 before other effects. A maker order may not fill, but the difference is large enough to matter before comparing much smaller futures commissions elsewhere.

07Does a coin's Malaysian Shariah status also cover a leveraged perpetual?

No such conclusion follows from the coin alone. The SC's asset classification and the financing, settlement and other terms of a leveraged contract concern different arrangements. This review does not establish blanket Shariah approval for the international perpetuals discussed, even when their underlying coin appears in a recognised asset assessment.
