Kraken or Bybit for crypto futures in Tonga?
Kraken has the stronger fit for a Tongan trader comparing Bitcoin and Ether perpetuals on published entry-level costs. Its standard derivatives taker fee is 0.05%, against Bybit’s headline non-VIP rate of 0.055%. Both list a 0.02% maker fee. The saving is modest; Kraken’s international cash-funding and withdrawal documentation also gives a bank-funded reader a concrete route to investigate before converting pa’anga.
That combination earns Kraken the lead here. It does not mean every Tongan bank will send to its payment provider. Tonga is absent from Kraken’s international derivatives exclusions, but the customer still needs a fully verified account and product access. Our comparison checks published conditions; it does not claim a completed transfer from a Tongan bank.
Bybit is a credible alternative when you specifically want USDT-settled perpetuals and already have an eligible way to fund them. Its international restriction list does not name Tonga. Choose the contract that settles in the asset you intend to hold, rather than moving all your trading money to save a tiny difference in commission.
| Reader priority | Kraken international derivatives | Bybit international account |
|---|---|---|
| BTC or ETH perpetual trading | USD-valued multi-collateral account | USDT, USDC and inverse contract families |
| Published base maker / taker | 0.02% / 0.05% | 0.02% / 0.055%; region and account can change the rate |
| Funding from a Tongan bank | Check available international cash instructions after verification | Do not assume a direct TOP bank-deposit facility |
| Best reason to choose it here | Lower headline taker rate plus a documented cash exit to investigate | A USDT trading balance and the matching USDT contract |
How much leverage can a Tongan account use?
Kraken’s current contract specifications place BTC/USD and ETH/USD perpetuals in its 100x class. Other markets have lower classes, including 50x, 25x, 20x and 10x. These are product limits subject to account eligibility and position size, not a promise that a Tongan customer can select 100x on every asset.
There is no evidence in the reviewed NRBT material of a Tonga-specific numerical cap that can be substituted for these exchange limits. Equally, a missing local multiplier does not grant unrestricted permission to move investment funds overseas. The local investment-transfer decision and the trading account’s limit answer different questions.
For this comparison, use the limit shown beside the exact market after verification. A BTC perpetual, a newer altcoin perpetual and a spot-margin pair can all have different limits on the same platform. If you are comparing a Kraken BTC limit with a Bybit altcoin limit, you are not comparing equivalent products.
USD margin or crypto collateral?
Kraken’s multi-collateral account values the position and profit or loss in USD. It can accept eligible non-USD collateral, with asset-specific adjustments and possible charges. That makes it flexible, but paying in with Bitcoin does not remove Bitcoin’s own price movements from the balance supporting your trade.
For someone starting with TOP savings, the practical question is whether to convert into dollar-based collateral or deliberately retain crypto exposure. If you already hold BTC and add a leveraged BTC long, both the collateral and the position can deteriorate when Bitcoin falls. A stablecoin-funded account avoids that particular double exposure, while retaining stablecoin and exchange risks.
What does Tonga’s TOP 100,000 threshold actually permit?
The NRBT page currently links its June 2023 Exchange Control Directive. Under its offshore-investment section, authorised institutions may approve applications up to TOP 100,000 per application. Larger applications require NRBT approval. Investment details and evidence of the source of funds accompany the request; Form E is the published offshore-investment application.
This is delegated approval, not a no-questions-asked allowance. A TOP 4,000 application is below the threshold, but still describes an investment requiring the appropriate processing. An exchange advertising 100x leverage does not multiply the amount your bank may approve for transfer.
Describe the account as crypto derivatives when that is what you intend to trade. Giving the bank a spot Bitcoin purchase description while supplying a futures account’s beneficiary details can leave it assessing the wrong transaction. A useful request includes the receiving business, the funding currency, the amount and the planned product; it need not contain pages of trading theory.
The directive also addresses foreign securities and foreign-currency accounts. The bank determines which provisions apply to the specific account and transaction. Keeping USD in Tonga does not by itself turn an investment into an ordinary operating payment.
Can I deposit TOP directly into Kraken or Bybit?
A pa’anga price displayed on a crypto website is not necessarily a pa’anga deposit facility. The accounts compared here use supported cash currencies or crypto assets, rather than a TOP-settled BTC perpetual. Decide which receiving currency your verified account actually offers before buying foreign currency at the bank.
BSP Tonga publishes international money transfers for its customers, including branch and registered online channels. That establishes a banking service, not a guarantee that a particular crypto beneficiary will be accepted. Match the bank’s approved investment payment to the exchange’s live instructions, including the recipient name, currency and reference.
Compare the amount that arrives
Suppose two permitted ways of funding the same account both cost TOP 2,000. One credits USD 810 after all charges; the other credits USD 825. The second leaves USD 15 more available before any trade. These are illustrative quotes, not a current TOP exchange rate or an advertised banking offer.
By comparison, Kraken’s and Bybit’s headline taker rates differ by USD 0.05 on a USD 1,000 opening trade. Even counting a same-sized exit, that fee difference is only USD 0.10. For an occasional trader funding from Tonga, the conversion and transfer quote can matter much more than the small trading-fee advantage.
Already holding USDT
A supported crypto deposit avoids asking the exchange to accept TOP. It does not establish that the original purchase or offshore investment met Tonga’s rules. Keep the record linking the crypto to its acquisition and use the deposit network offered by the receiving account. The token name alone is insufficient when the same stablecoin exists on several networks.
There is no verified universal “Tonga P2P rate” in this guide. A seller’s quote, availability and payment conditions vary. An advertised local bank transfer to a marketplace seller should not be presented as a formal banking partnership with the exchange.
What will a BTC perpetual trade cost?
At the reviewed standard rates, a USD 2,500 position opened and closed as a taker at unchanged size costs USD 2.50 in Kraken commission and USD 2.75 at Bybit. A maker entry and maker exit cost USD 1 at either headline 0.02% rate. A limit order that immediately matches can still be charged as a taker.
Those totals exclude the bid–ask spread, price slippage, perpetual funding, cash conversion, withdrawal fees and liquidation charges. They also assume the published entry-level schedule applies to the account. A regional rate, promotion or earned VIP tier can change the result.
Holding a position costs something different
Funding is the payment exchanged between the long and short sides of a perpetual market. Its amount and direction can change. It is not a guaranteed charge of the same percentage every day, and it is not included in the headline maker/taker comparison above.
Kraken’s multi-collateral fee page also describes charges when losses are not covered by qualifying dollar-based collateral. That matters if your starting asset is BTC rather than USD or an eligible stablecoin. Read the collateral treatment for the balance you actually deposit; the lowest visible order commission is only one part of the cost.
For a Tonga-based reader, translate the final result back into TOP using the actual conversion received. A profit displayed in USD can buy a different amount of pa’anga at withdrawal than the same USD amount bought at deposit. Do not evaluate the trade by an app’s approximate local-currency display alone.
How do I bring futures proceeds back to Tonga?
Kraken publishes cash withdrawal methods with currency, minimum, fee and country conditions. Use the options that appear for the verified account, then establish whether your receiving Tongan bank accepts that currency and sending institution. “International” in a help article does not guarantee every combination of bank and customer.
For Bybit, do not assume that selling USDT on the platform creates a direct pa’anga bank withdrawal. A crypto withdrawal and the later conversion into TOP are separate transactions. If your only practical exit is a marketplace buyer, the buyer’s quote and ability to complete the local payment belong in the comparison before you fund a futures position.
A useful withdrawal record connects three events: the futures account’s realised result, the movement out of the exchange, and the amount credited locally. This separates trading performance from the costs of getting the money home. It also gives the receiving bank a clearer explanation than a screenshot showing only a crypto balance.
The NRBT directive provides for repatriation when the Reserve Bank issues the relevant direction. It should not be paraphrased as an automatic daily requirement to close every crypto position. Follow any conditions attached to the actual approval and retain that approval with the account records.
Tongans abroad, island residence and tax records
A Tongan passport does not preserve the same futures access after a permanent move. Kraken’s international derivatives exclusion list specifically includes New Zealand; Australia has a separate qualified-customer arrangement. A person living in Auckland must therefore use the New Zealand product assessment rather than this Tonga shortlist.
For customers living in Tongatapu, Vava’u, Ha’apai or another Tongan island group, the reviewed exchange rules did not establish different derivatives limits by island. The practical difference can be the banking channel available to that customer, not a different crypto jurisdiction.
What records help with Tongan tax?
Section 4 of Tonga’s Income Tax Act uses a home in Tonga, 183 days within a relevant twelve-month period, or a government posting abroad as alternative residence tests. Spending fewer than 183 days in the country is therefore not, by itself, proof that every overseas gain falls outside Tongan tax.
The Income Tax Act contains rules for foreign income and foreign tax credits. Its treatment of qualifying overseas employment should not be extended automatically to futures profits: wages from a seasonal job and a trading result are different sources of money.
Retain realised trading statements, fees, funding payments and the TOP amounts paid or received. The entire withdrawal is not necessarily profit because it can include your original capital. No official crypto-perpetual-specific personal tax ruling was established in this review, so this page does not invent a flat crypto tax rate or promise an exemption for leaving money offshore.
